Patriot wrestlers runner up at Coldwater

COLDWATER, Ohio — Eleven wrestlers finished with winning records.
The Patriots were second as a team.
Jay County High School’s wrestling team fell to the host Cavaliers in the Coldwater Invitational on Saturday.
Jay County (12-2) cruised to victories against Van Wert (64-21), Columbus Grove (64-7), Wayne Trace (52-21) and Delphos Jefferson (45-24) to set up a showdown with Coldwater. The Cavs came out on top, 39-23.
Andy Kohler, who is ranked fourth in the state at 182 pounds, was the lone Patriot wrestler to go undefeated. He was 5-0 on the day, improving his season record to 32-0.
Colton Compton, Thomas Hemmelgarn, Tyler Leonhard and Ivan Hemmelgarn were all 4-1 for the tournament. Ian Liette, Davis Anderson, Tristen Atkins, Levi Hummel and Jacob Ferguson finished 3-2. Daniel Ostrowski was 3-1.
Dallas Dudleston was 2-3 on the day, and Simon Brumfield and Max Schmit were both 1-1.
Tribe wins big
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery won its fourth straight game Saturday, 58-41 over the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers.
The Indians (9-2) led 10-9 after the opening quarter and hung on to a 26-23 advantage at halftime.
The Tribe ran away with the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 21-4 after the break to lead 47-27 heading into the fourth.
Caleb Martin led the Indians with 12 points off the bench, and Micaiah Cox was close behind with 11 points. Darien Sheffer had nine points and eight rebounds, and Wes Wenning hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds to go with his seven points.
The Tigers’ Jaden Maxwell led all players with 24 points.
Reese Rogers scored 21 points in leading the FRHS junior varsity team to a 67-39 victory. Ryan Braun (11 points) and Clint Metzger (10) joined him in double figures.
SA bounces back
MONROE — South Adams’ boys basketball team bounced back from consecutive losses with a 59-43 victory Saturday over Southern Wells in the consolation game of the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament at Adams Central.
South Adams (6-6) jumped out to a 19-9 lead after the opening quarter and took a 26-17 lead into halftime. The Stars continued the pressure out of intermission, outscoring the Raiders 24-6 for a 50-23 advantage after three quarters.
All five starters scored in double figures for South Adams (6-6). Jared Grabau led the way with a game-high 15 points. He also shared the team lead with Justin Nussbaum (10 points) by grabbing eight rebounds.
Marcus Teeter tallied 14 points, with Cole Myers and Cody Fike chipping in with 10 points each.
Jake Horton led the Raiders with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Stars top Jets
MONROE — South Adams’ girls basketball team returned to its winning ways Saturday with a 59-32 victory against Adams Central in the ACAC tournament consolation.
A strong opening quarter gave Class 2A No. 10 South Adams (16-2) a 16-6 lead after eight minutes, and it pushed the advantage to 27-11 at half.
The Starfires, who had lost to Jay County in the opening round of the conference tournament, held a two-point edge in the third quarter, outscoring the host Jets 18-16 in the frame before pulling away in the final period.
Madi Wurster was 6-for-8 from the free-throw line on her way to a game-high 18 points. Sydney Pierce was second on the team with 15 points. Skyler Zuber tallied nine points, Lexi Dellinger added seven and Calyssa Lehman chipped in with seven points.
Kara Keller led Adams Central with seven points.
