Katy Smeltzer was often winning races for her high school Patriot team.
Now she’s doing it for her collegiate Patriots.
Smeltzer, a 2015 Jay County High School graduate, picked up the second individual victory of her career Saturday and helped with another for the University of the Cumberlands women’s swim team Saturday in a 139-66 victory over Ashbury University.
She won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1 minute, 3.92 seconds, to finish ahead of her teammate Anna Clayton by less than three tenths of a second.
The freshman was part of the winning 400 freestyle relay team with Victoria Tornelli, Brittany Litke and Christina Klouda. They finished with a time of 3:49.67.
She was also the runner-up in the 50 freestyle (26.25 seconds).
The JCHS graduate swam the freestyle leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay team Friday against Campbellsville University. She was also the runner-up in the 200 freestyle (2:04.2).

Was one of five University of St. Francis men’s basketball players to score in double figures Saturday, but also suffered a foot injury in an 82-67 win over Indiana Wesleyan.
Comer hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 14 points for the NAIA Division II No. 3 Cougars (17-4) before his injury, which is expected to keep him out of action for about two weeks. He also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
The junior totaled 17 points, six steals, five rebounds and three assists Jan. 12 as USF defeated Spring Arbor 84-62. He had 12 points, six assists, five rebounds and a steal in a 95-82 win over Taylor on Jan. 9.

Scored nine points off the bench Tuesday for the Brescia University women’s basketball team in an 87-71 victory over IU Kokomo.
She was 3-of-9 from the field, including draining her only 3-point attempt and making both free-throw attempts. She also had five rebounds, two assists and one steal in nearly 23 minutes.
The freshman had nine points for the Bearcats (13-10, 8-2 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) on Saturday in a 77-69 victory over IU Southeast. She also had two rebounds and a pair of assists.
She tallied two points Jan. 14 in a 75-71 win against Cincinnati Christian, her first game back after suffering a hand injury.

Came up big for the Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team Jan. 11 in its 86-59 blowout of Grace Bible.
Gelhaus shot 3-of-5 as he finished with a game-high seven rebounds to go along with seven points, one assist, one block and one steal. He had five points and two assists Jan. 14 as the Cardinals (12-4) fell 75-70 to 19th-ranked Lake Superior State and totaled two points and two rebounds in Saturday’s 94-84 loss to Northwood.

Finished second for the University of Northwestern Ohio men’s basketball team in scoring Saturday in a 59-52 loss to Concordia.
Pottkotter shot 3-of-5 from the field and made both of his foul shots to tally eight points. He also had two rebounds and a steal for the Racers (7-14).
The senior had two points, one rebound and one block Wednesday in a 70-59 loss to Michigan-Dearborn. He finished with eight points Jan. 9 in UNOH’s 58-55 loss to Lawrence Tech and had four rebounds, one point and one assist in a three-point loss Jan. 13 to Indiana Tech.

Was the No. 2 rebounder for the University of Northwestern Ohio women’s basketball team Wednesday in its 65-61 overtime win over Michigan-Dearborn.
Kahlig came off the bench to grab five rebounds for the Racers (11-10). She also had one point.
The senior made both of her field-goal attempts Saturday, finishing with four points, four rebounds and an assist as UNOH defeated Concordia 71-65.

Kahlig played 16 minutes in a reserve role, going 2-of-5 from the field and making half of his four 3-point attempts. He also had one rebound and a pair of steals.
He added nine points and one rebound Jan. 14 for the Oilers (10-5, 7-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) in an 80-76 win against Ohio Dominican.
The sophomore tallied two points Jan. 9 in an 80-69 victory over Hillsdale, and notched six points in a 75-70 win against Saginaw Valley State on Jan. 7.
