Chief girls sweep SA
Jay County roundup
The Chief seventh graders had a balanced offensive attack.
Their defense limited the Starfires to just two points in the second and third quarters.
East Jay Middle School seventh grade girls basketball team earned a 39-11 victory Thursday over the visiting South Adams Starfires.
The EJMS eighth graders also won, 30-19.
Natalie Miles led the seventh grade Chiefs for the second consecutive game, scoring a game-high 14 points. Grace Saxman was second on the team with eight points, and Anna Heath added six points.
Alana Kunkler tallied four points, Pacie Denney contributed three, with Aubrie Schwieterman and Zoey Elzey chipping in with two points each.
Macey Weitzel led the East Jay eighth graders with 11 points. Anhely Montes and Mikele Suman had six points each, and Shadie Canturbury added three points. Mackynzie Fairchild and Alyssa Leonhard both had two points.
South Adams stats were not provided.
EJ 8th wins
BERNE — Three players reached double figures Thursday as the East Jay eighth grade boys basketball team beat South Adams 42-34.
East Jay’s seventh grade squad lost, 44-12.
Sheldon Upp led the Chief charge with 15 points. Brayden Sprunger and Brian Williams had 11 and 10 points respectively. Gabe Link chipped in with four points and Cameron Henry added two.
Blake Caldwell’s four points was a team-high for the East Jay seventh graders. Bailey Cox added three points, with Brody Auker and Griffin Mann scoring two points each.
Both teams are 7-8 on the season and 5-2 in the Allen County Athletic Conference.
Eagles, Patriots split
DUNKIRK — West Jay’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams split with the Heritage Patriots on Thursday.
The West Jay seventh graders won, 13-8, and the eighth graders lost in overtime, 21-19
Lillian Clemmons led the seventh graders with six points and eight rebounds. Demi Grove (six rebounds), Grace Morgan (four rebounds) and Sophie Fugiett (one rebound) had two points each, and Abbi Kuss had one point to go with her two rebounds.
For the WJMS eighth graders, Kymia Hankins led the way with seven points and 14 rebounds. Hallie Fields was second on the team with six points and five rebounds, and Allison Jobe had four points.
Nevaeh Cox totaled two points.
West Jay falls
MONROEVILLE — The seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams at West Jay both lost Thursday to the Heritage Patriots.
The Eagle eighth graders dropped a 32-27 game, and the seventh graders fell 27-26.
Brinnin Wasson totaled 13 points to lead the eighth graders. Trevan Vore was second with six points and Dylan Bowler was close behind with five. Storm McLaughlin and Peyton Nichols had three and two points respectively.
Logan Brown scored 13 points to lead the seventh grade Eagles. Lane Chapman added four points, with Drew Powers, Riley Foster and Frankie Crump each scoring three points.
Eagles beat Titans
DUNKIRK — Kaelyn Denny and Isabelle Rodgers both scored in double figures Thursday, helping the West Jay sixth grade girls basketball team to a 25-23 victory over the Muncie Northside Titans.
Denny led the way with 11 points, while Rodgers followed with 10.
Rylee Hambrock and Maddy Ardizzone had two points apiece.
WJ tops Burris
MUNCIE — West Jay’s sixth grade boys basketball A team defeated the Burris Owls 34-23 on Thursday.
The B team lost 10-4 in a shortened game.
Quinn Faulkner and Camdin Harrison had 13 and 12 points respectively for the A team, and Caleb Hale totaled five points.
Trenton Alexander and Nick Street tallied two points each.
Cody Bivens and Kess McBride both scored two points for the B squad.
