FORT RECOVERY — The Cavaliers scored the opening bucket of the game.
They didn’t lead again.
Fort Recovery High School’s girls basketball team outscored the Coldwater Cavaliers 19-4 in the opening quarter and road the momentum to a 56-34 victory Thursday at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
The Indians improved to 13-2 and remained a perfect 6-0 in Midwest Athletic Conference play with the win, setting up a matchup Jan. 28 with Division IV No. 10 Minster for the outright conference lead.
Junior Whitney Will torched the Cavaliers to the tune of 10-for-18 shooting to finish with a career- and game-high 23 points. She also led the Indians with seven rebounds and three steals.
Jocelyn Kaiser (12 points) and Grace Thien (11) joined her in double figure, with Kendra Siefring and Kiah Wendel adding four points each.
Denise Schwieterman paced Coldwater with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity squad fell to 5-9 with a 28-16 loss.
Hanna Knapke and Chloe Metzger had five points each to lead the Indians, and Brooke Gaerke grabbed 10 rebounds.
SA tankers cruise
BERNE — The South Adams boys and girls swim teams won every event Thursday in cruising to victories over the Blackford Bruins.
The SAHS girls won 131-49, and the boys earned a 132-26 victory.
Twins Ashton and Brette Klopp as well as Caroline Kloepper were all double winners for the Starfire girls. Ashton Klopp won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races. Her sister Brette was first in both the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, and Kloepper earned victories in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Korinna Schindler (diving), Hadi Hawbaker (100 freestyle) and Audrey Burson (100 breaststroke) also won their respective events.
South Adams won all three relays as well.
Daniel Burson, Daniel Steffen, David Steffen and Xavier Rupp picked up two wins each for the Starfire boys. Burson was first in the 200 and 500 freestyle, Daniel Steffen won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, David Steffen was the fastest sprinter in the 50 and 100 freestyle races, and Rupp won both the 100 butterfly and diving events.
Zach Teeple also won the 100 backstroke, as the boys swept the three relays too.
Tribe 7th wins
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery Middle School seventh grade girls basketball team remained unbeaten Thursday with a 33-18 victory over the Versailles Tigers.
The Tribe eighth graders lost 31-15.
Kierra Wendel had a game-high 13 points for the FRMS seventh graders (13-0).
Hope Wendel followed with eight points and Elena Evers chipped in with four. Trisha Gaerke and Paige Fortkamp had two points apiece.
Val Muhlenkamp led the Tribe eighth graders with six points and Brooke Kahlig added four points. Kierra Wendel tallied three points and Macy Day totaled two.
