CELINA — The Portland Rockets scored two early runs and held on down the stretch in a 2-1 victory Wednesday against the host Grand Lake Mariners.
Portland (2-1) scored two runs in the opening inning when leadoff hitter Dalton Tinsley walked and scored on a single from Billy Geeslin. Mitch Waters then followed with an RBI double for a 2-0 Rocket advantage.
Coldwater product Derek Thobe earned the win. He allowed one run on two hits in four innings of work. Relief pitchers Dan Borchers, Alex Delk, Waters and Geeslin combined to keep the Mariners off the scoreboard in the final five innings.
Zach Tanner, Kevin Sharpe, Tristen Becher and Delk each had hits for the Rockets, who host the Mariners at 7 p.m. Friday at Runkle-Miller Field.
Minnich tops PG-14
Minnich Architecture shut out PG-14 in a 7-0 victory Wednesday in Portland Junior League’s Willie Mays division.
Dusty Pearson had a home run, a triple and a single while driving in five runs for Minnich.
Christian Runkle, Zach McAbee and Timo Minnich each had singles, and McAbee scored three times.
Tyler Manor smacked a triple as the only hit for PG-14.
Minnich improves to 8-2 on the season while PG-14 falls to 2-6-1.

Trinity wins 10-3
In Portland Junior League’s Rookie softball action, Trinity United Methodist defeated Portland Optimist 10-3.
Rihanna Hartman, Kayleigh Stevenson and Erin Aker each had two singles to lead Trinity, which improves to 5-5 on the season.
Jacquelin River pelted three singles, and Rose Carter had a double and a single for Optimist (3-7).
