Ronald short story is online this month
Taking Note
Jay County native Margaret Ronald has a new short story published online this month at clarkesworldmagazine.com, the website of a Hugo Award-winning science fiction and fantasy magazine.
The story, “And Then, One Day, the Air was Full of Voices,” is also available in an audio version.
The daughter of Jack and Connie Ronald of Portland, Margaret Ronald is the author of “Spiral Hunt,” “Wild Hunt,” and “Soul Hunt,” the Evie Scelan series.
All three books are available in both print and Kindle editions from Amazon and can also be found at Jay County Public Library.
A graduate of Williams College, Margaret resides in Watertown, Massachusetts, with her husband and daughter.
She is employed at Harvard University and is working on her master’s degree in higher education administration at the Harvard University School of Education.
Her fantasy and science fiction short stories have appeared in Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Strange Horizons, Clarkesworld, Baen’s Universe, Realms of Fantasy, Electric Velocipede and Fantasy Magazine.
Her short stories have been anthologized in “The Best Horror of the Year Volume 1,” “Steampunk II,“ “Steampunk III” and “The Mammoth Book of Steampunk.”
Time to grow
Portland American Legion Post 211, Jay County Bicentennial Committee and Jay County Visitor and Jay County Visitor and Tourism Bureau are sponsoring a beard and moustache contest.
Participants are to have been clean-shaven as of June 1 and will compete in seven categories — best-groomed mustache, longest beard, shabbiest beard, goatee, handlebar mustache, whitest beard and lamb chops — with a $100 prize for each category. Winners will be selected as part of activities Sept. 27 when the bicentennial torch relay comes through Jay County.
The entry fee is $5, and tickets are available at area banks and the visitor and tourism bureau.

Jay County Public Library will have its bookmobile at Portland Water Park from noon to 2 p.m. and 2:30 to 4 p.m. at Shwanda’s Greenhouse on Monday; Redkey Elementary from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. at Hudson Family Park on Wednesday.
