Historical museum open for PHS alumni
Taking Note
Jay County Historical Society will hold an open house this weekend at its museum at the east end of Main Street in Portland in conjunction with the Portland High School Alumni Banquet, which is set for Saturday.
The museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Scholarship available
The Portland Foundation is offering a $500 scholarship to a qualifying HSE graduate for continuing education.
Applications are available at John Jay Center for Learning and the office of The Portland Foundation. The application deadline is Friday, July 1.

Derby scheduled
West Jay Optimist Club will host its annual fishing derby from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
The event at 9848 W. 600 South, Redkey, is free and open to those ages 3 through 17. Poles and bait will be available if needed.
In addition to the derby, there will also be a casting contest. Conservation officer Rhett Braun will present a knot-tying demonstration.
Lunch will be served at noon.
Lessons available
Portland Water Park will offer swimming lessons beginning Monday.
The session will run for one week with class times in the morning. The fee is $15, and registration is open at the water park during regular hours — until 8 p.m. today, noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Nominations sought
The Indiana Military Veterans Hall of Fame is seeking nominations for its third class of honorees.
The organization honors Hoosier veterans for service during and after their active duty.
So far, the hall of fame has honored 34 men and women.
Up to 15 veterans will be recognized this year. To be eligible, a nominee must meet any one of these criteria: Be born in Indiana, entered military service in Indiana, or lived in Indiana for a minimum of eight years.
All branches of the U.S. Armed Forces will be considered equally, as will all ages, males and females, and living or deceased nominees.
The induction ceremony will take place on Nov. 4 at the Garrison at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Lawrence.

Cook-off set
Community and Family Services will host its fifth annual Grill Master Cook-Off on Aug. 27.
This year’s event will be held at 514 N. Meridian St., Portland, on the former car lot that is now the site of Joe on the Go’s coffee trailer.
This year’s proceeds will go to support CFS’s People Helping People Program, which helps clients keep their electricity and heat services connected during times of need.
The event begins at 5 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. or when the food is gone, whichever comes first. Food is $5 per plate, and guests can enjoy the grill of their choice.

Targeting heroin
The surge in heroin use across the Midwest, including use by teens, is being targeted by the Indiana Youth Institute.
The organization is sponsoring several regional forums to delve into the trend and search for solutions.
One such forum is set for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Beeson Clubhouse, 900 S. Beeson Drive, Winchester.
Laci Giboney, a therapist with Unified Solutions and a former heroin addict, will join Randolph County Sheriff Ken Hendrickson for the event.
The forum and lunch are free, but reservations are required. To make a reservation, go to http://www.iyi.org/ywc or email Indiana Youth Institute outreach manager Debbie Jones at [email protected].
The event is a collaborative effort involving Reach All Randolph County, Randolph County Wraparound, Centerstone of Indiana, Randolph Area YMCA, and the Indiana Youth Institute.
