With the title on the line, Analyn Huftel came through.
Huftel set the pace for the Jay County Monuments offense Wednesday night as it defeated Masonic Lodge 18-7 in the Portland Junior League Major League softball tournament championship game. Masonic had topped Graphic Printing 19-18 in a semifinal game earlier in the evening.
Huftel led her team to victory as she recorded a trio of hits. Also recording hits for Monuments in the championship effort were Lexie Ferguson, Shadie Canterbury, Mariah Gross and Kearston Myers.
Justice Day had a pair of doubles for Masonic Lodge in the loss.
Mary Hartman delivered the game-winning single for Masonic in the win over Graphic Printing. Day smacked two triples and a double, and Rieley Brewster had a triple and two doubles.
Gwen Butcher powered Graphic with a home run as part of a three-hit effort.
Eels finish strong
GREENVILLE, Ohio — The Fort Recovery Eels summer swim team finished its season with a winning record thanks to a 905-629 victory Wednesday over host Darke County Swim Club.
The Eels swept the 15-and-older girls division, with Alexis Bubp winning the 50-meter freestyle, 50 butterfly and 100 individual medley while Sophie Timmerman took first place in the 500 breaststroke, 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle. They also teamed with Sydney Alig and Rachel Kaup for victories in both relays.
Also winning three events for Fort Recovery (3-2) were Teigen Fortkamp (25 butterfly, 50 freestyle and 100 IM), Riley Hiser (25 freestyle, 25 backstroke and 50 freestyle), Kyra Clark (25 butterfly, 25 breaststroke and 100 IM), Avan Bubp (50 breaststroke, 100 freestyle and 100 IM) and Jacob Acheson (50 freestyle, 50 backstroke and 50 breaststroke).
