A Jay County High School graduate is a big reason why they got there.
Kegan Comer, JCHS class of 2013, scored 32 points to lead the NAIA Division II No. 1 University of St. Francis men’s basketball team to an 81-80 victory Tuesday in the Crossroads League Championship game. The win was sealed when Austin Fox hit the second of his two free-throw attempts with 1.7 seconds left.
Comer, who had been held to single-digit scoring in each of the first two Crossroads League tournament games, caught fire with the title on the line. He was 10-of-14 from the field with three 3-pointers and 9-of-10 from the line for his game-high total.
He also had two rebounds and one assist for the Cougars, who finished 29-4 and were rewarded with a No. 1 seed in the NAIA Division II Tournament. USF will open tournament play Wednesday against Dakota State University at College of the Ozarks’ Ketter Gymnasium in Point Outlook, Missouri.
Comer finished with nine points, two rebounds, two blocks and an assist in his team’s 70-63 Crossroads League Tournament quarterfinal win Feb. 25 over Marian. He totaled five points, four assists, one rebound and a block as the Cougars topped Goshen 80-76 in the semifinal round Saturday.

Scott Schwieterman
Jay County – 2013
Will join his former teammate in the NAIA Division II Tournament as his Indiana Tech men’s basketball team was rewarded for its 23-9 record.
Schwieterman and the Warriors will play Dakota Wesleyan (22-10) in the opening round of the tournament at 7:30 p.m. March 10 at Keeter Gymnasium. Indiana Tech is a No. 4 seed in the 32-team tournament.
The Warriors’ turn in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament came to an end Saturday with a 90-65 loss to eighth-ranked Cornerstone in the semifinal round. Schwieterman came off the bench and finished with six points and five rebounds in 10 minutes.

Catherine Dunn
Jay County – 2015
Finished with five points and three rebounds for the Brescia University women’s basketball team in a 65-60 loss to IU East on Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament in Richmond.
The freshman was 2-for-9 from the field and made one of her two 3-point attempts in nearly 19 minutes of action off the bench for the Bearcats (19-14). She also had a pair of assists, was second on the team with two blocks and had one steal.
Dunn played in 27 games, shot 30 percent from the field and averaged slightly more than five points per game.

Elijah Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2014
Had two points off the bench for the University of Findlay men’s basketball team in a 62-61 loss Tuesday to Ferris State in the opening round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament.
The sophomore played 10 minutes off the bench and was 1-of-2 from the field for the Oilers (20-8).
Kahlig played in all 28 games this season, making one start and averaging nearly 14 minutes per game. He was 37.8 percent from the field and netted 4.6 points per game.

South Adams – 2015
Had a pair of hits and two walks for the Bethel College baseball team during the Dodgertown Spring Invitational in Vero Beach, Florida.He was 1-for-2 with two walks in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday against Weber International, a 9-3 loss. He added a hit in game two, a 9-0 defeat to the Warriors.
The sophomore also went 1-for-3 and scored the lone run as the Pilots (0-7) lost to Grace College Feb. 27.

Chandler Ingle
South Adams – 2015
Made two appearances on the mound for the Goshen College baseball team.
He gave up two hits, walked one and allowed one earned run in a third of an inning of relief during a 3-0 loss Feb. 25 to NAIA No. 14 Tennessee Wesleyan in Toccoa Falls, Georgia.
The next day he recorded two strikeouts and walked one without allowing a run in two innings of work for the Maple Leafs (3-6) during a 14-1 loss to Toccoa Falls.

Wade Gelhaus
FRHS – 2013
Came off the bench for the Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team Tuesday as it suffered a 91-85 upset loss at the hands of Walsh in the quarterfinal round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
Gelhaus hit two field goals and two free throws as he finished with six points for the Cardinals (22-7). He also had one rebound.

Kylie Kahlig
FRHS – 2012
Saw her season come to an end Feb. 25 as the University of Northwestern Ohio fell 56-44 to NAIA No. 18 Lawrence Tech in the quarterfinal round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament.
Kahlig grabbed three rebounds for the Racers, who posted a 13-18 record. She also had one point and one assist.

Abbi Dunlavy
Jay County – 2014
Finished 28th in the mile run at the indoor Summit League Championships on Saturday hosted by her IPFW Mastodons.
The sophomore crossed the finish line in 5 minutes, 50.07 seconds. Erin Teschuk of North Dakota State was the race winner in 4:41.78.
The Mastodons scored 17 points to finish sixth out of eight teams. NDSU won with 220.5 points.
