A rural Pennville woman struck a deer with her SUV today in Jackson Township.
Megan M. Buschur, 21, 6262 N. 550 West, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was traveling east on county road 650 North near county road 650 West when she saw two deer crossing the roadway.
She said she hit the brakes of her 2005 Chevrolet Equinox but was unable to avoid hitting the animal.

No leak
Portland Fire Department responded today to a possible gas leak in a trailer.
At 3:49 a.m., one truck and two firefighters arrived on scene to 1237 N. U.S. 27, lot 131, Portland. The firefighters brought gas detectors but found nothing.

They were back at the station at 4:03 a.m.

Backing crash
Two Portland drivers were involved in an accident Monday on South Alley near the intersection of East Main and South Harrison streets.
William L. Enyart, 73, 447 E. Seventh St., told a Portland police officer he pulled up to a mailbox on South Alley and didn’t see a 2012 Ford Focus that was behind him. He then backed the 2009 Chrysler Town & Country he was driving into the Focus.
Mary L. Bickel, 44, 1428 W. 350 South, told the officer she pulled up behind the Chrysler and was waiting to drop off mail when the SUV backed into her car. She said she tried to back up her car to avoid the collision but was unable to move in time.
Enyart checked both vehicles, did not think there was any damage and left the scene.
The Town & County is registered to Patty S. Enyart, same address.
Damage in the 3:15 p.m. collision is estimated to be less than $1,000.
