Capsule Reports
Four injured
Four rural Bryant residents were injured Monday afternoon in an accident involving two pick-up trucks near the entrances to Wal-Mart and Lowe’s on the north side of Bluffton.
Tracey Wengerd, 34, Ervin Wengerd, 34, Rosalynn Wengerd, 1, and Peyton Hoarsley, 5, were taken to Bluffton Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. They were all passengers in a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche driven by Charmin C. Tabor, 52, Hartford City.
Tabor’s vehicle collided with a 2005 Ford F-150 driven by Daniel M. Price, 66, Ossian. It was northbound on Main Street when Tabor attempted to drive from the Wal-Mart lot across Main Street to the Lowe’s parking lot. There is a stoplight at the intersection, but the police report did not conclude which driver had the right of way.
Damage to the two vehicles was more than $10,000.
Hydroplanes
A car driven by a Dunkirk man ended up a ditch in Adams County Monday night after hydroplaning in standing water.
Robert G. McDowell, 45, told Adams County police he was northbound on Adams County road 400 West when he attempted to drive through standing water from recent rains. His car slid into the east ditch and sustained between $5,000 and $10,000 in damage.
Fire alarm
Portland Fire Department responded to a fire alarm that went off early today at John Jay Center for Learning, 101 S. Meridian St., Portland.
Seven firefighters and two trucks were on scene at 5:38 a.m. to find a sprinkler head in the basement was activated because it was near a heating unit and got too hot.
The firefighters shut the water off to stop the sprinkler, and the head has to be replaced.
They arrived back at the station at 6:15 a.m.
Deer crash
A Dunkirk man struck a deer with the car he was driving Wednesday in Knox Township.
Sha M. White, 25, 489 Haskell Road, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was traveling south on Indiana 1 near Division Road when a deer ran into the roadway. He said he was unable to avoid hitting the deer with the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt he was driving.
The Cobalt is registered to Crystal M. Morris, 703 West E. St., Dunkirk.
Damage in the 11:43 p.m. crash is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
