Capsule Reports
Blackford fire
Dunkirk Fire Department responded at 2:05 a.m. to a call for structure fire in Blackford County.
Nine firefighters and two trucks were on scene at 6211 E. Indiana 26 at 2:20 a.m. with assistance from Hartford City Fire Department.
The fire was out by 3:05 a.m., and Dunkirk firefighters were back at the station at 3:25 a.m.
False alarm
Redkey Fire Department responded to a smoke investigation at 10:26 a.m. Sunday that turned out to be a false alarm.
Thirteen firefighters and one truck arrived at 10:30 a.m. to 404 N. Meridian St. to find only exhaust pipe fumes from a furnace.
The department was back in service at 10:35 a.m.
Deer crash
A Ridgeville woman crashed into a deer with her SUV at 9 p.m. Friday in Pike Township.
Sharon L. Atkinson, 74, 310 E. Main St., told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was traveling north on U.S. 27 near county road 700 South when a deer entered the roadway. She was unable to avoid a collision, striking the animal with her 2001 Pontiac Montana.
Damage is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Needle found
A Portland resident reported to police at 6:26 p.m. Friday that she found a needle.
Brandee Sparrow, 8612 E. 200 South, told a Portland police officer there was a syringe found in front of the house at 123 S. Charles St.
An officer disposed of the needle.
BB gun found
A Portland resident reported to police at 7:25 p.m. Friday that his daughter found a gun in a field between Charles and Oak streets.
Ken M. Fredericksen, 216 N. Oak St., told a Portland police officer, his daughter found what might be a .22 caliber or a BB gun in the field.
Police found it to be a pump air BB gun that belonged to the residents at 102 W. Charles St.
