Hospital the focus of historical gathering

Jay County Hospital — Yesterday and Today will be the focus for the Jay County Historical Society’s next program meeting at 7 p.m. on March 29.
Program committee member Janice Stucky will present a short history of the hospital, and JCH chief executive officer Dave Hyatt will discuss what’s ahead for the future.
Members and potential members of the historical society are invited to attend the event at the historical museum at the end of East Main Street in Portland.

Book battle
A “Battle of the Books” will be held at 6 p.m. on March 29, in the auditeria of Fort Recovery Elementary/Middle School.
More than 50 students from Fort Recovery will be competing. Students were given a pre-selected list of titles to read and study as preparation for the competition.
The event is open to the public.

Serves as page
Brooke Sanders, Portland, a student at Jay County High School recently served as a page at the Indiana General Assembly for State Sen. Travis Holdman (R-Markle).
Holdman will begin accepting page applications for the 2017 session of the legislature in December.

Color us happy
Adults looking for a way of reducing stress, calming, and soothing the nerves are invited to an adult coloring session every Thursday in March from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Conference Room A at Jay County Hospital.
Colored pencils and pages will be provided by the Jay County Hospital Auxiliary, but participants can bring their own if they would like. For more information, contact Kristi Henry at (260) 726-1853.

New director
Claudia Jones has been named to the board of directors of the Jay County Historical Society, filling the vacancy created by the death of longtime board member Ralph Grapner.
She is recently retired from working as materials manager at Jay County Hospital.
Classes set
Spring cultural classes are planned by the National Center for Great Lakes Native American Culture for April 2 and 3 in the Women’s Building at the Jay County Fairgrounds.
Classes include sweet grass weaving, taught by Tina Burns; dreamcatchers and more, taught by Paula Butcher; backyard medicine, taught by Susan Gray; handmade soaps and lotions, taught by Rachel Sadowski; and woodlands crafts for children, taught by Julia Conley.
The class fee is $50 per person for members and $75 per person for non-members. In addition, some classes have a materials fee. The children’s class fee is $25 which includes all materials.

Coffee and Canvas
A Coffee and Canvas painting class is set for April 9, at Jay County Public Library. The class begins at 10 a.m. and continues to noon.
Tisha Gierhart of Tribal Paint Canvas and Laugh will be the instructor. The cost is $20, and registration is required by April 6.
