'Financial Feud' is Thursday

An event next week will offer an opportunity to improve financial literacy.
The Crossroads Financial Federal Credit Union’s youth advisory board will host “Financial Feud” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Lions Club Civic Center 307 E. 100 North, Portland.
The free event, sponsored by Crossroads and Portland Lions Club, will include a “Family Feud”-style competition in which randomly-selected teams of three answer multiple choice questions about finances. Those could include asking what president is on a particular bill or how to build good credit.
There will also be food, prizes and entertainment from Frye Family band.

Meeting set
Jay County REMC will hold its annual meeting on Saturday, April 9, in the auditorium at Jay County High School.
Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. as does a member business expo. The Wright Brothers will entertain at 6:15 p.m., and the business meeting is set for 7 p.m.
A children’s program will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the high school gym, supervised by Boy Scout Troop 212.

Judgment upheld
The U.S. Supreme Court this week upheld a $5.8 million judgment against Tyson Foods Inc. in a pay dispute with about 3,000 employees at a pork-processing plant in Iowa.
Tyson had asked the court to impose a new limit on the ability of workers to band together to challenge pay and workplace issues. That argument was rejected 6-2.

CR-V to Indiana
Honda Manufacturing is moving production of its CR-V model from Mexico to its plant in Greensburg.
A major customer of FCC (Indiana)’s clutch manufacturing operation in Portland, Honda of America already produces the Civic in Indiana and will continue to do so.
The CR-V is the best selling sports utility vehicle in America.
Honda established its Indiana operation in 2008 and has continued to invest in its Greensburg plant.

New executive
Citizens State Bank, which has a branch in the Shadyside neighborhood of Dunkirk, has named Donna M. Howell as its new senior vice president/chief operating officer. She will assist bank company president and chief executive officer Dan Maddox.
A graduate of the University of Southern Indiana, she has been a certified treasury professional since 1999.
Citizens State Bank is a fourth generation, family-owned community bank with 14 offices in central Indiana. It is headquartered in New Castle.

LifeCare hires
Family LifeCare of Berne and Marion has hired three new registered nurses and a licensed practical nurse.
Marshia Slusser of Jay County has joined the staff as an LPN. New registered nurses include Donna G. Hawk of Adams County, Beth Cartwright and Karen Bartel.
Family LifeCare is a non-profit organization that provides home and hospice care in 10 counties, including Adams and Jay.

Excel class
Ivy Tech Corporate College will be offering a Microsoft Excel 2010 Level 1 class at John Jay Center for learning next month.
The class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays from April 26 through May 17.
The cost of the class is $195, and the registration deadline is April 19.

100 years
Representatives of the Michigan company that now owns what used to be Sheller Manufacturing recently visited Jay County Historical Society in connection with Sheller’s 100th anniversary.
Key Safety Systems, based in Sterling Heights, now owns the corporation that grew out of Sheller.
The company began in 1916 when Harry E. Sheller started producing wood automobile rims and steering wheels. It later became Sheller-Globe Corporation and was a mainstay of local manufacturing until the late 1970s and early 1980s.

ISO 14001
Ardagh Group Glass-North America, the parent of glass container plants in Dunkirk and Winchester, announced this week that its Bridgeton, New Jersey, plant had achieved ISO 14001:2004 certification.
ISO 14001 is internationally recognized as the standard for environmental management of businesses.
Ardagh’s Dunkirk plant, which produces millions of longneck beer bottles daily, had already been ISO 14001 certified.

Buys a chunk
Pt Asset Management recently bought 3,239 more shares of Allegheny Technologies Inc., parent company of Portland Forge, bringing its total investment in the company 99,284 shares worth about $1.7 million. That represents about 4.1 percent of the hedge funds portfolio.

Spinning off?
The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Yum Brands, parent company of Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, is in talks to spin off about a third of its business to investors interested in its China operations.
The Journal indicated the company was in talks with KKR & Co., Baring Private Equity Asia, and some Chinese firms.
Yum decline to confirm or deny the report.

New store
Honeysuckle, a home décor store, is opening in Berne under the ownership of Shelby and Josh Goodman. Shelby Goodman will manage the store, which will be located in the former Sport Form location on Sprunger Street across from the Berne Public Library.

Marketing award
Ivy Tech Community College Northeast has received a gold Paragon award from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations. It is Ivy Tech Northeast’s first gold Paragon award since 1997.
