BERNE — Grant Besser is playing well beyond his years.
The South Adams High School freshman pitched five innings of shutout baseball, striking out 10 and walking two as the Starfires beat the Blackford Bruins 5-1 on Monday.
South Adams (8-7), which travels to Jay County at 5 p.m. tonight, took a 3-0 lead after the first inning, and tacked on two more runs in the second to get its only runs early.
Joe Stuber, Braxton Haight and Tyler Sprunger all had two hits, with Jayden Dull driving in two runs.
Besser dazzled before giving way to Gilbert Lynch. He pitched one inning, gave up one earned run on one hit and gave up three walks.
Dull also pitched, allowing one hit and striking out three.

FR falls to ’Cats
FORT RECOVERY — A seven-run sixth inning doomed the Fort Recovery softball team Monday in a 12-5 loss to the Minster Wildcats.
Fort Recovery (2-16, 0-5 Midwest Athletic Conference) scored a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings to tie the score, 5-5, but the Wildcats (11-9, 3-1 MAC) took the lead for good and put the game out of reach with seven runs in the top of the sixth.
Devin Post was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, with Chelsea Timmerman and Kasey Vogel each adding two singles. Vogel also walked twice, and Audra Metzger also tallied a hit.
Timmerman took the loss. She allowed 12 runs — five earned — on six hits. She struck out five and walked nine.

Dues hits walk off
Kevin Dues had a walk-off single Monday as Williams Auto Parts opened its Rookie boys division season of Portland Junior League action with a 6-5 victory over All-Circuit Electrical.
Cole Carpenter had three singles for Williams, which got two singles each from Max Klopfenstein and Carter Harman. Wesley Wenning added a home run.
Grant Wendel led All-Circuit from the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, and Jayden Harrell was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
