Schools award scholarships
Taking Note
Area students from the South Adams area 18 Machine Trades program at South Adams High School were awarded scholarships at the 2016 SkillsUSA Indiana State Contest.
In the CNC technician contest, Noah Lehmann, a junior at South Adams High School, placed first and won a $7,500 scholarship to Lincoln Tech; Tyler Sprunger, a senior at SAHS, was second and won a $5,000 scholarship to Lincoln Tech; and Brennan Reinhart, a junior at Jay County High School, placed third and received $2,500 for Lincoln Tech and $1,000 for Universal Technical Institute.
In the CNC turning specialist contest, Michael McKinley, a junior at JCHS, placed first and won a $7,500 scholarship to Lincoln Tech; and Mason Sell, a sophomore at SAHS, placed third and won $2,500 for Lincoln Tech and $1,000 for Universal Technical Institute.
Robotics classes
For students interested in building things, the John Jay Center in Portland is the place to be this summer.
John Jay and Jay County Robotics are sponsoring several VEX Robotics camps at the center for students in fifth through 12 grade with instructor Doug Tipton.
Introduction to VEX Robotics will be held June 6 through 10; VEX Robotics Advanced Chassis Design will be held June 20 to 24; VEX Robotics Advanced Intake Design will be held June 27 to July 1; VEX Robotics Advanced Lift Design will be held July 18 to 22; and VEX Robotics End Effectors will be held July 25 to 29.
All camps will be from 8 a.m. to noon and the cost is $25 or $100 for all five. Registration forms are available at johnjaycenter.com or at JJCL at 101 S. Meridian St. For more information, email [email protected].
The camps are sponsored by J&P Custom Plating, F.C.C. Indiana, The Portland Foundation and Fort Recovery Industries, Inc.
Portland Alumni Banquet
The Portland High School Alumni Association will host the annual Portland High School Alumni Banquet on Saturday, June 18.
The event will be held in the commons at Jay County High School, with a social hour from 5 to 6 p.m. Dinner will follow.
Classes to be honored will be 1931, ’36, ’41, ’46, ’51, ’56, ’61, ’66 and ’71.
The cost is $15 per person and checks can be made payable to “Portland Alumni Association” or a money order can be sent. Reservations are due by June 1 and can be mailed to Portland Alumni Association, Neil Medler, Treasurer, 524 N. Meridian St., Portland, IN 47371.

At Fort Library
Activities are coming up at Fort Recovery Public Library.
The Crochet Club will meet at 10 a.m. on May 10, 17, 24 and 31 and also at 7 p.m. on May 11, 18 and 25.
The Card Club will meet at 1 p.m. on Tuesday and again on May 24.
Novels at Night will begin at 7 p.m. on May 16 and tech help classes will be held at 3 p.m. each Monday in May.
Stop by for a craft night at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17.
The library is at 113 N. Wayne St. and is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday and is closed on Thursday and Sunday.
Cooking, exercise classes
A free healthy cooking and exercise classes will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 13, for seniors 55 and older, at the Arthur and Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion at Swiss Village in Berne. For more information, call director Briana Eicher at (260) 589-4496.
