South Adams bats blast Bellmont

BERNE — The Starfires showed they are capable of hitting for power.
It resulted in 29 hits, including four home runs, as the South Adams High School softball team swept the Bellmont Squaws on Saturday evening.
South Adams (13-4) won the first game 12-3, then needed just five innings in game two for a 15-4 victory.
Isabella Ramirez and Tori Raugh each hit their first career home runs. Ramirez also had a triple in racking up five hits while driving in six RBIs. Raugh had a four-hit effort in the opener as well as a double in game two.
Keirstyn Grimm and Morgan Alberson also had home runs, as the Starfires totaled nine extra-base hits. Grimm had seven hits total and drove in five runs while scoring five times. Alberson had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice. Madison Morgan chipped in with two doubles, two singles and three RBIs.
Katelin Augsburger was the winning pitcher in game one. She scattered six hits over seven innings, gave up three runs — one earned — while striking out four and walking three.
Anna Nussbaum got the win in the second game. She allowed four earned runs on eight hits while walking one in five innings.

Stars fall in title
BERNE — The South Adams baseball team had its offense go cold as it fell in the title game of the Starfire Invitational on Saturday.
The Starfires (11-8) managed just one hit in a 12-2 loss to Blackhawk Christian after defeating Frankton 5-2 in the opener.
Jayden Dull was a home run shy of the cycle in the opener, scoring once and driving in one run. Corbin Blomeke had a three-run home run, and Joe Stuber, Isaiah Baumgartner and Mark Clary each had hits against Frankton.
Stuber notched the only hit, a single, against Blackhawk Christian, and Dull had two RBIs.
Grant Besser earned the win in the semifinal. He struck out 10, walked two and gave up four hits in seven innings of work.’
Dull was charged with the loss in the title game. The junior lasted three innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits while striking out two and walking one.
Gilbert Lynch, Tyler Sprunger, Justin Nussbaum, Baumgartner and Clary all pitched for the Stars.

SA gofers fourth
BLUFFTON — The South Adams boys golf team finished fourth Saturday in the Bi-County Meet at Timber Ridge Golf Course.
The Bellmont Braves won the team tithe with a score of 327. Bluffton was second with 337 and Norwell was third with 345.
South Adams totaled 375.
David Muselman led the Starfires with an 84, finishing in a six-way tie for fourth place.
Jacob Rife was second on the team with an 88, and McGerran Clouser was third with a 91. Dexter Miller shot a 112 to round out the Starfires’ team score.

Zach Colpaert also competed, and he finished with a 121.
Bellmont’s Grant Ainsworth was the match medalist with a 5-over par 77.

Patriot JV wins
Jay County’s junior varsity softball team defeated the Muncie Central Bearcats 16-0 on Friday.
The Patriots scored six runs in the first inning before adding two in the second and one in the third. They padded the advantage with seven runs in the fourth inning for the lopsided victory.
Kailee Denney made her first start of the season, and only allowed one hit in the five-inning shutout.
Maggie Pryor paced the Patriot offense, going 4-for-4 with two triples, three RBIs and three runs. Randi Ferguson had a double and two singles, and Kaylee Inman totaled two singles and a pair of RBIs.
Jay County improves to 7-1-1 on the season.

JC drops two
COLDWATER, Ohio — Jay County’s junior varsity team dropped two games Saturday to the Coldwater Cavaliers.
The Patriots lost the first game 6-1, then fell 4-3 in game two as the Cavaliers scored all four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Garrett Rodgers had two doubles in the first game and finished with four hits total. Michael Stevens tallied four singles, and Jordan Schricker had three singles in game two. Daniel Fugiett added a double and a single.
Rogers took the loss in game one, and Isaac Moeller suffered the defeat in the second game.

Winners are champs
AVON — Portland residents Mason and Mallory Winner claimed ISWA state championships over the weekend.
Mason, an East Jay Middle School eighth grader, finished first in the 145-pound weight division of the ISWA Freestyle Cadet championships on Saturday. He was 4-0 with three major decision shutouts, and also won by a 10-5 decision.
Sunday, he went 3-0 to win the ISWA Greco Roman Cadet state title at 145 pounds. He had back-to-back 10-0 decisions, then won by pin in 4 minutes, 48 seconds.
Mallory Winner went 2-0 to win the girls freestyle intermediate championship on Sunday.
Mason Winner qualifies for the USA Wrestling Cadet Duals in York, Pennsylvania, which will be June 14 through 18.
