MARION — A Starfire is going to state.
Addie Wanner, a South Adams High School sophomore, got a call back as a state finals participant for her efforts in the 100-meter hurdles during the IHSAA Girls Track and Field Regional on Tuesday at Indiana Wesleyan.
Wanner placed in two events, helping the Starfire girls track team finish 17th in the meet at Indiana Wesleyan.
Northrop won the team title with 98 points. Homestead was runner up with 77, and Carroll was third with 47.5 points. South Adams totaled 9.5 points.
Wanner had a time of 15.54 seconds in the preliminaries as the No. 3 seed for the finals. She finished fifth in 15.38 seconds, and was one of the final call backs to fill the field of 27 for the state finals.
She also tied for fourth in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 2 inches. Je’bria Green of Wayne was the champion with a height of 5 feet, 3 inches.
South Adams also had a top-eight finish from Olivia Von Gunten in the 800 run. She was eighth in 2 minutes, 24.95 seconds.
Caroline Kloepper finished 13th in the 400 dash in 1 minute, 2.08 seconds. The 4x800 relay team of Eliza Harruff, Hadi Hawbaker, Katelin Hawbaker and Von Gunten was 15th in 11:00.97.
Alberson leads
CHURBUSCO — The South Adams baseball team advanced to the sectional semifinal with an 11-1 victory Tuesday over Bluffton in the opening round of the Class 2A Sectional 36 tournament.
South Adams (20-6) meets Woodlan at 5 p.m. tonight. The Warriors defeated the host Eagles 2-1.
The Starfires led 1-0 after the first inning before striking for six runs in the third, highlighted by a three-run home run from Morgan Alberson. It was her third homer of the season.
South Adams tacked on one more run in each of the fourth and fifth innings before scoring two in the sixth for 11 consecutive runs. Bluffton broke the shutout in the bottom of the sixth.
Alberson added a pair of singles to lead the Starfires. Abby Myers had a double, a single, an RBI and a walk, while Keirstyn Grimm, Isabella Ramirez, Madison Morgan, Katelin Augsburger, Casi Evans and Kayla LeFever also had singles.
Augsburger allowed one hit, one walk and struck out seven in four innings to get the win.
Fort falls to Tigers
VERSAILLES — A four-run sixth inning doomed the Fort Recovery baseball team Tuesday in a 6-1 loss to the Versailles Tigers.
The two teams scheduled the game as a tune-up for this week’s regional tournament. Fort Recovery meets Defiance Ayersville at 5 p.m. Thursday in Hamler for the Division IV Region 14 semifinal. Versailles plays Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy in the Division III Region 12 semifinal at 5 p.m. Thursday in Xenia.
Versailles (21-4) nabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning, and it stood until the Indians (20-9) tied the game in the top of the fifth. The Tigers responded with a run in the bottom of the frame before tacking on four more in the sixth.
Nick Thwaits drove in the lone run for the Indians. He had one hit and also walked once.
Cade Wendel, Jacob Homan and Will Homan also had singles.
Reese Rogers took the loss in relief. He gave up three earned runs on seven hits. He walked three and struck out four in four innings.
Jay tops Indians, Rebels
WINCHESTER — Jay Houck broke 40 in leading the Jay County boys golf team to a first-place finish Tuesday at Winchester Golf Club.
The Patriots totaled 164, defeating Union City (196) and Randolph Southern (243).
Houck paced the Patriots with a 38, and Collin Haines was second on the team with a 41. Kyler Hudson followed with a 42, and Graham Haines rounded out Jay County’s team score with a 43.
Nick Hayden, who finished third overall in the Allen County Athletic Conference meet on Saturday, finished with a 46.
