Capsule Reports

Went off road
A LaGrange man lost control of a commercial vehicle Monday afternoon in Penn Township after one of the vehicle’s tires struck an object in the roadway.
Auston R. Clay, 29, 4570 S. 150 East, was eastbound in a 1992 Ford truck on Indiana 18, west of Indiana 1, when the truck’s front tire struck an object in the roadway. Clay told Jay County Sheriff’s Office the tire blew after it struck the object, causing him to lose control of the Ford, which left the roadway and struck an American Electric Power utility pole before coming to rest in a field.
The Ford is registered to Roger N. Clay, same address as the driver. It was towed from the scene.
Damage in 2:07 p.m. accident is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.

Backing accident
Two Jay County teenagers were involved in a backing accident Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot at Jay County High School.
At approximately 4 p.m., an officer with Jay County Sheriff’s Office received a call from Blade A. McEwen in reference to a car accident. The officer met with McEwen, 17, 2582 N. Indiana 1, who told him that at approximately 3:30 p.m. he was backing out of a parking spot in the JCHS parking lot and began going forward when a 2000 Dodge Durango backed into the side of a 2002 F150 he was driving.
McEwen said he pulled back into a parking spot and wrote down the license plate number for the Dodge. He said he didn’t believe the other driver knew she hit his vehicle.
The license plate number returned to Jurnee C. Garret. The officer met with Garret, 17, 3489 S. 1150 West, Dunkirk, who said she did not feel any impact while backing her vehicle out of the parking lot. The officer observed a light amount of damage on the Dodge’s right rear side.
The drivers later met up to look at the damage on both vehicles. Damage in the 3:30 p.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.

Deer struck
Two Jay County residents struck deer with their vehicles recently.
Tim Sell, 55, 8474 W. 150 North, was traveling east shortly after 6:30 a.m. Tuesday on county 100 North, near county road 100 West, when a deer ran onto the roadway. He was unable to avoid striking it with his 2000 Dodge Dakota.
Jody Williamson, 42, 7879 N. 450 East, Bryant, was westbound shortly before 5 a.m. this morning on Indiana 67, west of county road 350 East, in Bearcreek Township when she hit a deer with her 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe.
Damage in both accidents is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.

Rear-end crash
A Portland man’s Dodge was struck in the rear Monday evening in Wayne Township while it was stopped to allow deer to cross the road.
Ryan W. Adams, 24, 233 E. Arch St., was traveling north on U.S. 27, north of county road 100 North, when he stopped his 1992 Ford Crown Victoria because of deer crossing the roadway.
James T. Strohl, 23, 1237 N. U.S. 27, Portland, was operating a 1997 Dodge Dakota behind the Ford and told police he didn’t see the stopped vehicle because he was watching the deer cross the road, causing the Dodge to strike the rear of the Ford.
Damage in the 6:23 p.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
