WESTFIELD — The Jay County High School girls swim team opened its season Saturday with a third-place finish in the Kristin Rice Westfield Invitational.
The host Shamrocks won with a team score of 593. Yorktown was the runner-up with 436, and Jay County was third with 359 points.
Alex Bader was the lone Patriot to earn an individual victory. She was first in the 100-yard butterfly with her time of 59.74 seconds. She also added a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.
Elizabeth McDowell, Erica Hathaway and Cassie Reno all placed in the top eight in two events. McDowell was fourth in the 100 backstroke and eighth in the 200 freestyle, Hathaway placed fifth in the 500 freestyle and eighth in the 200 individual medley and Reno finished seventh in the 100 freestyle and eighth in the 50 freestyle.
Also earning top-eight finishes were Samantha Link (fourth – diving), Jamie Valentine (fifth – 100 breaststroke) and Vivienne Kunkler (sixth – 100 breaststroke).
Jay County’s 200 medley relay of McDowell, Valentine, Bader and Hathaway placed third, while McDowell, Reno, Valentine and Bader teamed for a fourth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The 400 freestyle relay squad of Emma James, Kaitlyn Dow, Kunkler and Hathaway placed seventh.

UNION CITY — South Adams’ girls basketball team fell to 1-1 on the season with a 52-31 loss Saturday to the Union City Indians.
The Starfires were within striking distance after the first quarter as they trailed 9-7, but the Class 2A No. 9 Indians (4-1) outscored them 18-7 during the second for a 13-point lead at the break.
South Adams cut into the deficit slightly during the third quarter, but trailed 36-24 heading into the final stanza.
Calyssa Lehman led the Starfires with a dozen points. Madi Wurster was second with seven points, and Sydney Pierce followed with five. Lexi Dellinger and Kayla LeFever had three points apiece.
South Adams’ junior varsity team defeated Union City, 30-27. Ally Weaver led the offense with 11 points, and Lydia Loshe chipped in with seven.
