Accidental shooting
A rural Portland man was listed in stable condition this morning after he accidentally shot himself with a rifle Thursday afternoon.
Todd Weaver, 4337 N. U.S. 27, was cleaning his Hi Point 40 caliber rifle without realizing it was loaded when it discharged and fired a bullet through his upper left chest and shoulder. Weaver was transported to Jay County Hospital, where he was flown by Lutheran Air to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Head on crash
A Portland man and a Chillicothe, Ohio, man were involved in a car accident that left four injured Wednesday afternoon.
Wesley L. Davis, 23, 216 S. Mulberry St., Chillicothe, Ohio, was westbound on Indiana 67, west of the intersection with county road 250 East, when, according to a witness, his 2012 Ford Mustang drifted left of the center line and struck an oncoming vehicle head on.
Bernard O. Lautzenheiser, 68, 1237 N. U.S. 27 Lot 108, Portland, was eastbound on Indiana 67 when his 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager was struck head on by Davis’ Mustang.
Lautzenheiser, who suffered severe head injuries, was trapped inside the Grand Voyager, according the Jay County Sheriff’s Office.
Davis suffered cuts to his arms, and told police he couldn’t remember the accident. A passenger in his Mustang, Caleb A. Jewell, 21, 1695 Audrey Road, Columbus, Ohio, also couldn’t remember the impact, and complained of arm pain. Davis was issued a citation for driving left of center.
The passenger in Lautzenheiser’s Plymouth, Shirley A. Fontanini, 65, 500 Bruns Avenue, Celina, Ohio, complained of abdomen and pelvis pain and was treated by first responders.
Damage in the 1:36 p.m. accident was estimated between $25,000 and $50,000.
Circle K accident
A Portland man struck a Winchester man’s car Thursday evening in the parking lot of Circle K on the south side of Portland.
William Goodman, 31, 215 W. Sixth St., backed the 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan he was driving into a 2006 Suzuki Forenza that was parked at a gas pump in the parking lot of Circle K, 729 S. Meridian St.
The Suzuki is registered to Eric P. Hanlan, 310 South St, Winchester. The Grand Caravan is registered to Danielle R. Shrack, same address as driver.
Damage in the 4:23 p.m. accident was estimated under $1,000.
