Woman dead in apparent fall
Capsule Reports
A Portland woman died after an apparent fall Saturday morning on the city’s south side.
Portland Police Department received a call at 6:26 a.m. about a woman who was injured when she fell down the stairs. Samantha Pinkston, 28, 766 W. 7th St., Apartment 796, was pronounced dead from her injuries. Pinkston was seven months pregnant and had a history of seizures.
An autopsy was conducted Sunday and results from a Jay County Coroner’s Office investigation are still pending.
One injured
A Portland woman was injured in an accident Sunday morning on the west side of the city.
James R. Harmon, 37, 815 E. Arch St., Portland, told police he was waiting to pull out of the parking lot at Wal-Mart, 950 W. Votaw St., and onto Votaw Street in his 2007 Honda Accord. A westbound truck was in the turn lane, turning right into the Wal-Mart parking lot. Harmon pulled out to turn left onto Votaw Street, and his Accord was struck by a westbound 2011 Ford Fusion.
Janet S. Cain, 69, 2160 W. 50 North, the driver of the Fusion, was transported to Jay County Hospital for cuts she suffered during the accident.
Damage in the 11:32 a.m. accident was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
House fire
Portland Fire Department arrived to extinguish a house fire at 2:12 p.m. Saturday at 721 E. High St., Portland. The department was called out to respond to the fire at 2:09 p.m.
Seventeen firefighters and two trucks were at the scene, and the electrical fire was declared under control by 2:59 p.m.
Rear ended
A rural Portland woman and a Pendleton man were involved in an accident Sunday morning in southwestern Jay County.
Dorothy M. Gilbert, 23, 5916 W. 800 South, Portland, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was stopped at the south side of the intersection of county road 1150 West and Indiana 67. Gilbert pulled out to turn right onto Indiana 67 and the 2000 Chevrolet Venture she was driving struck an eastbound 1992 Chevrolet S-10 on its passenger side.
The S-10 was driven and by Anthony S. Combs, 50, 9008 Carriage Lane, Pendleton. The Venture is registered to Kalen J. Roberts, same address as driver.
Damage in the 10:08 a.m. accident was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
