Capsule Reports
Deer struck
A Bryant woman and Muncie man struck deer recently with their vehicles.
Hilarie D. Muhlenkamp, 27, 8709 E. 600 North, Bryant, was traveling north on U.S. 27, approaching county road 200 North in Wayne Township when a deer entered the roadway from the east. Muhlenkamp was unable to avoid striking the deer with a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, which was towed from the scene.
Damage in the 5:35 p.m. accident is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
Michael J. Morgan, 68, 3131 W. Roverton Road, Muncie, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was westbound on county road 500 North, west of the intersection with county road 150 West, when a group of four or five deer crossed the road in front of his 2006 GM Envoy.
Morgan told police he wasn’t able to avoid striking one of the deer.
Damage in the 6:18 p.m. accident was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
Backing accident
Two commercial vehicles were involved in a backing accident Monday in the parking lot of POET Biorefining, 1542 S. 200 West, Portland.
Dale W. Stanley, 73, 310 N. Cook Road, Muncie, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office his vehicle, a 2012 Peterbilt semi, was parked in the parking lot and that one of the workers asked him to back up the truck, which then hit the front of a parked 1997 International.
Stanley said he unsuccessfully attempted to get the attention of the driver of the International by using his horn.
The Peterbilt is registered to Chris F. Taylor, 810 E. Race St., Portland. The International is registered to Brehm Trucking Inc., Arcanum, Ohio.
Damage in the 3:32 p.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Burglary
A Portland woman reported a burglary Monday at her home.
Loretta L. Smith, 1112 N. Franklin St., reported at 4:03 p.m. that she had just gotten home from work and someone had been in her home. Smith said there was a window open but that she hadn’t been inside yet.
Police said today that someone had entered the home through the open window and took medication. The burglary occurred between 7:10 a.m. Monday and the time of Smith’s report.
Failure to yield
A Pennville man’s car was struck Monday morning in Greene Township after a rural Portland woman failed to yield.
Emilie C. Walter, 18, 842 N. 500 West, was eastbound on county road 200 North in a 2000 Honda Civic and had stopped at the stop sign at county road 200 West. She told Jay County Sheriff’s Office that she was waiting for a westbound vehicle to make a turn and failed to see a southbound Chevrolet GMT in front of it.
Allen M. Huey, 18, 4814 W. 300 North, Pennville, was driving the Chevrolet when Walter pulled the Honda out in front of the vehicle and struck it. Huey told police he was unable to avoid the accident.
The Honda is registered to Stacie A. Walter, same address as the driver. The Chevrolet is registered to Gregory A. Huey, same address as the driver. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
