BLUFFTON — The Patriots girls handled business.
The boys got an early look of what to improve on for conference and sectional.
The Jay County High School girls swim team earned a 105-81 victory over the Bluffton Tigers on Tuesday, while the Patriot boys fell 132-53.
Elizabeth McDowell and Alex Bader both won a pair of events for the JCHS girls. McDowell was first in the 200-meter freestyle in 2 minutes, 27.62 seconds, and picked up a victory in the 400 freestyle in 5:21.99. Bader won both the 50 freestyle (29.08 seconds) and 100 freestyle (1:06.12).
Also earning individual victories were Samantha Link (diving – 187.5), Erica Hathaway (100 backstroke – 1:22.38) and Vivienne Kunkler (100 breaststroke – 1:26.52).
Jamie Valentine, McDowell, Bader and Hathaway teamed to win the 200 medley relay in 2:17.54, and the 400 freestyle relay team of McDowell, Hathaway, Kunkler and Bader finished first in 4:46.6.
Junior Christopher McDowell earned the only wins for the JCHS boys, doing so in the 200 freestyle (2:20.5) and 400 freestyle (4:54.82).
Jay wrestlers win
CENTERVILLE — Eight wrestlers earned victories Tuesday in helping the Jay County wrestling team to a 45-28 victory over the Centerville Bulldogs.
Seth Fugiett (126 pounds), Nick Lykins (132), Jordan Schricker (145) and Tyler Leonhard (160) all earned first-period pins in their respective matches. Lykins needed just 39 seconds to beat Nigel Vance, Fugiett defeated Austin Westover in 1 minute, 10 seconds, and Leonhard topped Alec Runyon in 1:47. Schricker pinned Brice Griffen at the end of the first period.
Freshman Mason Winner earned his first career victory in pinning Mason Peed in 2:48 during their 152-pound match. Gaven Hare pinned Lucas Buchanan in the second period of their heavyweight match, and Davis Anderson (120) won by a 6-4 decision. Ivan Hemmelgarn won at 170 by forfeit.
Zakk Atkins (120), Jackson Lyons (132), Cooper Jacks (195) and Nathaniel Lykins (220) were each victorious in their respective junior varsity matches.
Stars move to 3-0
MUNCIE — Four players scored in double figures Tuesday as the South Adams boys basketball team moved to 3-0 with a 103-64 thrashing of the host Burris Owls.
It was the first time in more than two decades the Starfires eclipsed the century mark, and the most points they have scored in a game in a game since putting up 91 on Feb. 19, 1994, against Parkway.
Marcus Teeter and Jared Grabau both surpassed the 20-point mark for the second consecutive contest, as they shared the game-high of 26 points. Teeter was 11-for-20 from the field, including 4-for-10 from long range, while adding five rebounds. Grabau did all of his work in front of the 3-point line, as he was 12-for-16 and had four rebounds.
Lars In’t Groen notched a career-high 11 points, and Nick Wurster tallied 10 points for his first career game in double figures.
Jackson Adamowicz led Burris with 18 points.
David Muselman’s 13 points led the Starfire junior varsity team to a 50-22 victory.
Streak hits four
BERNE — The South Adams girls basketball team had its losing streak pushed to four games Tuesday with a 44-33 loss to the Norwell Knights.
South Adams (1-4) fell behind 10-9 after the first quarter and saw the deficit balloon to 21-13 at intermission. The Class 3A No. 7 Knights (4-1) pushed the advantage to 35-22 heading into the final quarter.
SAHS junior Madi Wurster did all of her damage from close range, as all of her game-high 16 points were two-point field goals. Lexi Dellinger was close behind with 13 points, and she made both of the Starfires’ two 3-pointers. Sydney Pierce (four points) was the only other Starfire to hit the scoresheet.
Logan Rowles led the Knights with 13 points, and Brielle Wilson joined her in double figures with 11 points.
South Adams’ junior varsity team also lost, 37-20
Lydia Loshe paced the Starfires with 14 points. Emilee Myers tallied four points and Ally Weaver had two points.
Eagles fall
DUNKIRK — West Jay’s seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams both lost to the Bluffton Tigers on Tuesday.
The eighth graders fell 41-19, and the seventh grade squad lost 32-29.
Hunter Shumaker led the WJMS eighth grade team with six points, and Ashton Kuss was close behind with three points. Riley Foster totaled three points, while Lewis Crump and Lane Chapman had two points apiece. Kolten Monroe made one free throw.
Quinn Faulkner scored 22 points in the loss for the seventh grade Eagles. Camdin Harrison was second on the team with four points and Kess McBride tallied three points.
