Greenfield-Central to visit Portland for football sectional
INDIANAPOLIS — The Patriots will get another home game.
The Starfires will face a team that has lost 19 straight contests.
In the IHSAA football sectional tournament pairings show held Sunday, Jay County High School drew a home game for its postseason opener.
The Patriots (4-3) will host the Greenfield-Central Cougars (4-3) at 7 p.m. Oct. 21. The winner will face either the New Castle Trojans (3-4) or defending sectional champion Delta Eagles (4-3) in the sectional semifinal Oct. 28.
Jay County has lost in the first round of the postseason in each of the last two seasons. Its only sectional championship was in 2007.
The other quarterfinal matchups in Class 4A Sectional 22 pit Pendleton Heights (2-5) at Connersville (2-5) and Mt. Vernon (4-3) at Richmond (3-4).
In the Class 2A Sectional 35 tournament, South Adams (4-3) will open the postseason on the road with a quarterfinal matchup against Prairie Heights Panthers (0-7). The Starfires are two years removed from a regional title, and the Panthers have yet to win a sectional championship.
The winner between South Adams and Prairie Heights will meet either the Bluffton Tigers (2-5) or Woodlan Warriors (7-0). The Warriors are defending sectional and regional champions and are the top-ranked team in the state.
The other two quarterfinal matchups have Whitko (6-1) traveling to Central Noble (2-5), and Churubusco (5-2) hosting Eastside (5-2).
