BERNE — Much like in the varsity game Friday night, the Starfires nabbed an early lead on Monday.
But then Collin Haines took over.
Haines rushed 22 times for 187 yards and scored two touchdowns in leading the Jay County High School junior varsity football team to a 22-15 victory over the host South Adams Starfires.
South Adams had a 15-8 lead at half, but then the Patriots (4-3) scored twice during the third quarter for the win.
Jay County’s other score came from Max Moser on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Gabe Faulkner. Caden Stant and Mitchell Frasher both had five tackles. Stant had four tackles for loss and Frasher had 3 1/2 stops in the backfield.
South Adams stats were not provided.
Freshmen shut out
Jay County’s freshman football team lost to Muncie Central on Saturday morning, 26-0.
The visiting Bearcats scored six or more points in each quarter, as they took a 14-0 lead into halftime. Muncie Central pushed the lead to 20-0 after three frames.
Gabe Link had 10 carries for 57 yards to lead the Patriot rushing attack.
Zakk Atkins and Link had four tackles each, with Marcos Garcia and Drake Mason adding three stops apiece.
The Patriots fall to 0-6 on the year, and host Northwestern at 6 p.m. Monday.
Chief 8th wins
PARKER CITY — East Jay Middle School’s eighth grade volleyball team knocked off the host Monroe Central Golden Bears on Monday, 25-17, 25-24.The Chief sixth grade team lost, 25-17, 25-15.
Pacie Denney and Kearsten Myers each had three aces to lead the Chief eighth graders (12-6). Denney chipped in with a team-high 11 points and nine assists, as Myers added three digs and three points.
Natalie Miles racked up a half dozen kills to go with her three points, two aces and pair of digs. Alaina Kunkler was second on the team with four kills, and Ashlyn Dow totaled five digs, three kills and three points.
Kunkler and Miles recorded three and two blocks respectively.
For the EJMS sixth grade squad (1-9), Natalie Wehrly and Laci McGinnis had four points each. Wehrly also totaled two kills and a pair of aces. Madison Brunswick, Ana Solis, Eden Abshire and Kylee Cross all had one kill.
Chief girls win
MUNCIE — The East Jay girls cross country team finished first Monday in a four-team meet at Delta.
All five scoring runners for the Chiefs finished in the top 10, helping the squad to a team total of 28. Delta was second with 49 points, and West Jay placed third with 74.
Delta’s boys won with 28 points. East Jay was second with 28 and West Jay placed third with 133.
West Jay’s Sophia Fugiett won the girls race with her time of 11 minutes, 54 seconds. Mara Bader and Lydia Keihn of East Jay were second and third respectively, with teammates Miranda Alig, Lillian Schmit and Lindy Wood finishing sixth through eighth.
West Jay’s Raven Weaver placed 12th, Aubri Hatzell was 18th, Grace Shimp placed 24th and Gabby Bilbrey finished 28th.
Mitchell Winner of East Jay won the boys race in 10:57. Teammate Xavier Myers was fifth, Al Hemmelgarn placed ninth, Dustin Harris was 19th and Flint Schmiesing was 13th.
Aaron Funkhouser was the top WJMS boy runner, finishing sixth. Trenton Alexander placed 15th, Gage Baker was 19th, Skyler Bee finished 45th and Isaiah Weekley crossed the finish line in 48th.
EJ 7th wins tourney
The East Jay seventh grade volleyball team finished first in the East Jay Invitational it hosted Saturday at Jay County High School.
The Chiefs defeated Bluffton 25-16, 25-13, before knocking off South Adams (25-19, 25-20) and West Jay (25-18, 25-10).
East Jay’s eighth grade team finished second. It beat Bluffton 25-11, 25-21, lost to South Adams 23-25, 25-16, 15-9, and defeated West Jay 25-11, 25-15.
Maddy Wenk led the seventh grade team with 24 points and 13 digs. She also had nine aces. Lilly Hedges followed with 16 points while adding team highs in aces (11) and kills (six). Kyanne Anderson and Madison Dirksen also reached double-digit point totals, tallying 14 and 11 respectively.
Pacie Denney recorded 33 points and 10 assists for the eighth grade Chiefs. Ashlyn Dow racked up 19 points, four aces and four kills, with Grace Saxman chipping in with 13 points. Alana Kunkler had 13 kills and 2 1/2 blocks.
West Jay stats were not provided.
Two earn medals
GREENWOOD — Two Jay County Special Olympics unified golf teams earned medals during the state tournament Sept. 24 at Hickory Stick Golf Club.
Kameron Woodbury and Zach Fullenkamp teamed to win the silver medal, with Conner Hoyt and Dave Fullenkamp earning a bronze medal.
The teams of Sam Glessner and Dr. Tom Dunn II, as well as Darrin Martin and Jeremy Kunkler finished fourth.
