Sophie Bader and Anne Vormohr have been swimming together almost their entire lives.
So it should be no surprise for them to make their collegiate debut in the same lane.
The cousins, 2016 Jay County High School graduates and freshmen at Ball State University, made their debut for the Cardinals on Saturday in the Indiana Intercollegiates meet hosted by Purdue.
Former rival Cady Farlow, a 2015 South Adams graduate, also competed in the meet for the host Boilermakers, who won with 861 points. Ball State was second with 484 points.
Vormohr and Bader teamed with Amanda Kedzierski and Jessica Extine to finish second in the 200-yard medley relay. Vormohr swam the backstroke leg with a time of 27.1 seconds. Bader handled the butterfly leg and had a split of 26.21 seconds. The quartet finished in 1 minute, 46.11 seconds.
Bader also placed second in the 100 butterfly with her time of 57.84 seconds, and was fourth in the 200 individual medley in 2:10.44.
Vormohr was third in 100 backstroke in 58.59 seconds and fifth in the 50 style in 24.41 seconds.
Farlow, a sophomore, was part of a 200 medley relay team that finished fifth in 1:47. She swam the breaststroke leg with a split of 28.87 seconds.
She also finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.81 and was eighth in the 100 freestyle in 53.68 seconds.

Eric Hemmelgarn
Jay County – 2014
Had a big defensive stop for the University of Saint Francis football team late in the fourth quarter Saturday to preserve a 28-21 victory over Robert Morris University.
Hemmelgarn, who had six tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and two quarterback hurries, teamed with Matt Muncy to stop Kenyatte Allen on first-and-goal from the 1-yard line. The NAIA No. 4 Cougars (7-1) then made three more stops to keep the lead intact.

Kelsey Fiely
Fort Recovery – 2013
Helped lead the University of Northwestern Ohio volleyball team’s defense Wednesday in a sweep of Lawrence Tech.
Fiely finished second for the Racers (15-18) with seven digs in the 25-22, 25-13, 25-18 victory.
The senior also had nine digs and two assists Saturday in a five-set loss to Davenport and 11 digs Friday in a three-set loss to Concordia.

James Keen
Jay County – 2015
Earned a single victory and was part of two second-place relay teams for the Tiffin University men’s swim team Saturday in a 51-48 loss to Gannon University.
Keen took first in the 100-yard backstroke with his time of 53.85 seconds.
He swam the butterfly leg of the 400 medley relay, completing his 100 meters in 53.75 seconds. Teaming with Tyler Adkins, Petko Toromanov and Ygor Zanardo Bortolato, they finished in 3 minutes, 41.55 seconds.

Keen then swam the second leg of the 400 freestyle relay with Adam George, Lucas Merigue Bernardo and Adkins. He had a split of 49.57 seconds, and they finished in 3:17.73.

Derek Wanner
South Adams – 2015
Recorded seven tackles for the Taylor University football team Saturday in a 34-14 loss to Concordia.
The sophomore defensive back had two solo stops and assisted on five others for the Trojans (3-6), who gave up 17 first-quarter points and were unable to recover.
Wanner has 20 tackles on the year, which ranks 10th on the team.

Wes Wenning
Fort Recovery – 2016
Appeared in his third straight game for the Ashland University football team on Saturday in its 70-14 victory against Kentucky Wesleyan.
Despite playing in each of the last three games, the freshman receiver has yet to catch a pass for the NCAA Division II No. 9 Eagles (7-1).

Abigail Johnson
Jay County – 2014
Ran for the Indiana Wesleyan women’s cross country team Saturday in the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge XC Invitational hosted by Aquinas University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Johnson, a junior, finished 160th overall in 21 minutes, 21.06 seconds, and was 14th on the squad for the Wildcats. IWU scored 151 points to place fifth out of 25 teams.

Aleesha Goodwin
South Adams – 2015
Competed for the Indiana Tech women’s cross country team Saturday in the NAIA Seminole Valley Stampede in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Goodwin was 89th overall in 20 minutes, 36 seconds, to finish seventh on the team. The Warriors were second out of 25 teams with a score of 103. University of Saint Francis won the team title with 55 points.

Kirsten Jutte
Fort Recovery – 2016
Totaled 28 assists in back-to-back contests for the Capital University volleyball team in a pair of losses recently.
Jutte had 28 assists, two aces and six digs in a 25-16, 25-23, 25-15 defeat to Heidelberg on Tuesday. She also notched 30 assists and six digs Saturday in a 25-16, 27-25, 25-17 as the Crusaders (5-21, 1-7 Ohio Valley Conference) lost at home to John Carroll.

Morgan Lennartz
Fort Recovery – 2016
Notched five kills in consecutive matches Saturday for the IU-East volleyball team at Midway University.
Lennartz had five kills, four digs and assisted on three blocks in a 3-2 loss (25-27, 25-16, 25-23, 23-25, 15-11) to Asbury, then followed it with five kills, three digs and two blocks in a 3-1 victory (25-18, 21-25, 25-17, 25-20) against host Midway.
The Red Wolves moved to 12-17 (5-8 River States Conference).

Cassidy Rammel
Fort Recovery – 2015
Played for the University of Saint Francis volleyball team in three losses recently.
The sophomore had nine kills and six digs in a 18-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-13 loss Friday to Huntington University. She followed that up with seven kills, three digs and an ace Saturday in a loss to Grace College, 26-24, 25-22, 25-22.
Rammel tallied four kills and two digs in a 25-15, 25-15, 25-20 loss Wednesday to Indiana Wesleyan University.
The Cougars, who have lost three straight, fall to 8-24 on the year and 4-12 in Crossroads League play.

Julie Valentine
Jay County - 2013
Ran for the Stephens College women’s cross country team Saturday at the St. Louis Fall XC Classic at St. Louis College of Pharmacy.
Valentine placed 80th out of 88 runners at the meet for the Stars, who finished 12th. She posted a time of 25 minutes, 47.7 seconds, in the 5K race.
