Food and drink fest Sept. 18
Business Roundup
With the Rural America Farm Expo still in the rearview mirror, the Jay County Chamber of Commerce already has another event on its near horizon.
The 2016 Jay County Food and Drink Festival, formerly known as Taste of Jay County, is set for Sunday, Sept. 18, from 4 to 7 p.m.
This year’s event, which provides an opportunity for area restaurants and caterers to showcase their wares, will take place in the Jay County Event Center, 555 S. Bridge St., Portland, behind the Jay County Antique Mall.
Cooking demonstrations and live entertainment are planned in addition to food and drink.
Advance tickets are $15 each and are available at the Community Resource Center in Portland.
For more information, contact the chamber at (260) 726-4481.
Doubling storage
POET Biorefining-Portland’s sister ethanol plant in Alexandria is doubling its storage capacity, building two new grain bins to handle this year’s harvest.
The new storage capacity will allow the plant to store more than 2 million bushels of corn on site.
“We just want to be able to provide a better service for our farmers for having more available storage, particularly at harvest time when we get extremely busy,” POET General Manager Dave Hudak told the Anderson Herald-Bulletin. “So by adding these grain bins, it helps farms.”
Hudak noted that since it opened eight years ago, the Alexandria plant has bought all of its corn from within Madison County.
Tornado aid
Ponderosa Steakhouse owners in Indiana raised $7,777.77 in a single day to help victims of tornados that whipped across Central Indiana in August.
A “buy one, give one” fund-raiser was held Aug. 28, with $1 for each entree or buffet sold that day donated to the American Red Cross.
Among the Ponderosas participating was Portland’s. The steakhouse chain has a long relationship with Kokomo, opening its first Kokomo store more than 50 years ago.
Refinancing
Ardagh, the parent company of glass container plants in Dunkirk and Winchester, is refinancing some of its 8 billion Euros in debt, The Irish Times reported this week.
The company has issued $1.565 billion in bonds and will use the proceeds to repay 1.21 billion Euros in notes that fall due in 2019 and carry an interest rate of 8.675 percent.
The new bonds will mature in 2023 and have an interest rate of 6.8 percent.
Ardagh has annual revenues globally of 7.8 billion Euros from its bottle and can business. It has 110 plants in 22 countries and employs 23,000.
Growing again
Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd., the Indian company that is the parent of MSSL Wiring Systems of Portland, is growing again through acquisition.
The automotive component manufacturer is buying Abraham and Co. Ltd of Hungary for about 10.4 million Euros.
The Hungarian company is considered an expert in plastic processing and the production of high quality auto parts in Europe.
New staff
Two new staff members have joined the Jay County team of State of the Heart Care. Shelby Patterson, RN, has joined State of the Heart as an on-call nurse, while Diana Doughty has joined as a social worker.
Patterson resides in Bryant with her husband Tyler and their four children. Doughty resides in Farmland with her husband Guy. She has three children and three grandchildren.
Closing
The John XXIII Retreat Center in Hartford City will be closing its doors at the end of 2016. The Christian retreat center has operated for the past 50 years as an ecumenical facility. An open house is set for Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.
Selling a slice
Yum Brands, the parent company of Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, is selling part of its Chinese operations, The Wall Street Journal reported this week.
Primavera Capital and Ant Financial Services Group, the financial affiliate of the internet company Alibaba, will buy a $460 million stake in Yum China Holdings Inc.
Fred Hu, a former Goldman Sachs Group Greater China chairman and well-known economist, will become the chairman of Yum China. He heads up Primavera Capital.
Lawsuit revived
A lawsuit against CVS Health Corp. was revived this week in federal appeals court in Boston, Reuters reported.
The proposed class action suit accuses CVS of deceiving consumers with labels touting the “heart health” benefits of vitamin E.
CVS maintains that its claims were backed by scientific studies.
New center
Kohl’s plans to open a new distribution center for online orders in Plainfield and create up to 300 new full-time jobs by 2018, The Statehouse File reported.
“As the Crossroads of America, Indiana continues to prove why it is a national logistics leader,” Gov. Mike Pence said in a statement Friday.
The national retailer will start renovations later this year on a 937,000 square-foot facility near the Indianapolis International Airport.
The e-commerce distribution center is expected to be up and running in late 2017.
In addition to the 300 full-time jobs, Kohl’s plans to add 600 new part-time positions with benefits as the center reaches full capacity.
Hiring for management, supervisory and other positions is expected to start in the spring of 2017. Anyone interested in applying can visit KohlsCareers.com for more information.
