FORT RECOVERY — It’s the defense that’s been coming up big all season with timely blocks and key digs.
The Starfires were the latest victim Tuesday.
Fort Recovery High School’s volleyball team totaled 13 blocks and shook off a surge in defeating South Adams on Tuesday night, 25-18, 25-18, 25-27, 25-11, at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
“Brooke Gaerke and Cassidy Martin do a fabulous job with the block and it kind of shows,” said FRHS coach Chelsea Rogers, whose team had 16 blocks. “Blocks are probably the most exciting point and it gets that momentum at its highest.
“I always stress that to Brooke and Cass, how those blocks are important to the way we do things.”
South Adams coach Ashley Buckingham agreed that her offense was unable to regularly get through the tall Fort Recovery defense.
“That is something we need to work on,” said Buckingham. The Starfires (13-5) have now dropped back-to-back matches after winning the previous five. “Some of our hitters need to start working on hitting around the block, seeing the block a little more.”
A Gaerke block started a five-point run early in the first set, and Martin tallied back-to-back stops during the second set to help the Indians (9-1) break a 14-14 tie. Martin — she had four solo blocks and assisted on four others — had one more moments later, as the Tribe won the first two sets, both by a 25-18 margin.

Fort Recovery had a chance to put away South Adams in straight sets, but couldn’t get the final three points.
Buckingham called a timeout with her team trailing 22-18, and out of the break the Starfires benefitted from two FRHS mistakes. Then an ace from Shania Neal got South Adams within one, 22-21 to prompt a Rogers timeout.
Fort Recovery took the next point, and an ace from Julia Grabau before a block and kill from Madi Wurster gave South Adams a 24-23 advantage, its first lead of the third set.
Errors by both teams eventually tied the score at 25-25, but consecutive attacks by the Indians sailed long to help South Adams stave off the sweep.
“That game I ran out of subs, and I’ve never done that before,” said Rogers.
Buckingham noted that while she was happy the Starfires were able to avoid the sweep, she was disappointed they couldn’t keep the momentum.
“We just struggled a little bit with consistency in that last game,” she said. “Then they got on a big run and we started playing within ourselves instead of as a team.”
The Indians jumped out to an 11-2 lead in game four, thanks to a serving run by Chloe Showalter. The freshman notched two aces and was aided by three kills from Carley Stone and a couple Starfire errors.
Stone finished with a match-high 12 kills, and her dozen digs was second on team to Alexis Bubp (13). Stone has been playing all over the court recently, and has become a crucial part of the Fort Recovery defense along with Kiah Wendel (seven digs), Audra Metzger (four digs) and Bubp.
“(Stone) wasn’t really vocal tonight but her serve receive was great,” said Rogers, whose team has won four straight matches for the second time this season after five wins in a row to begin the year. “Our digs weren’t always perfect — they went over the net — but just get them up. A dig is a dig.”
Fort Recovery freshman Paige Jutte was second on the team with eight kills. She also had four blocks and four digs. Martin tallied six kills, and Gaerke notched five. Madi Rammel had 33 assists, 11 digs and a pair of kills.
Madi Wurster led South Adams with 10 kills while also contributing three blocks, two of which were on back-to-back plays during the first set that helped the Starfires even the score at 14 apiece. Wurster’s 14 digs were tied for second on the team with Neal and were second only to Morgan Alberson’s 18. Caralie Farlow and Alberson both tallied six kills, and Julia Grabau notched 31 assists.
“Tonight we came up a little short, but these games make you better,” Buckingham said. “Playing good competition like Fort Recovery makes you better.”

Shaelynn Bowman and Lydia Loshe had three kills apiece for South Adams. Esther Troyer totaled 12 digs and Hannah Dull added 11.
