The focus recently has been on the defense.
It had shutout five opponents — including each of the last four — and was a key to a six-game winning streak.
Both streaks for the Jay County High School girls soccer team came to a close Thursday with a 3-2 loss to Bellmont.
But coach Giles Laux has many things to be taken away from a loss to the Class 1A No. 6 Squaws, who scored with 12 minutes, 18 seconds, left in the contest to break a 2-2 tie.
“I’m disappointed in the loss, but I’m not disappointed in the play because they did a great job,” Laux said, specifically noting the play of his forwards and defense. “Both teams were in it the whole game. I felt many times that it was going to be a tie because we matched up so well with each other.”
Bellmont coach Steve Lee acknowledged his team got a fortuitous bounce that led to the final goal.
Sophomore Mackenzie McMahon — she scored in the 22nd minute to make it 1-1 — took a corner kick for Bellmont. Rather than sending it toward the net, she dropped it back to a teammate for a better angle.
JCHS senior Lucy Laux deflected the shot, but with enough English on the ball it bounced to Bellmont sophomore Kristen Harvey near the top of the 18-yard box. Harvey corralled the bouncing ball and sent a right-footed shot toward the right side of the goal past outstretched Jay County goalkeeper Lilly Rogers.
“It was lucky,” said Lee, whose team moves to 7-1 on the year. “Sometimes the ball just bounces your way. Give all the credit in the world, Jay County played a really good game tonight.
“We’ve played some really good teams this year and they’re one of the better ones that we’ve played.”

Much of that was because of the Patriot defense — starters Megan Smith and Alexus Liette on the outside and sisters Briana and Emily Muhlenkamp on the inside. Along with subs Sydnee Lee and Hannah Link, the Patriots defense forced Bellmont into being whistled for offsides nearly a dozen times.
“We were struggling with the offsides trap,” Steve Lee said. “Jay County had a good game plan … but the offsides trap we definitely struggled with. Kudos to Jay County.”
The times Bellmont was not whistled for offsides, the Muhlenkamps, who anchor the center of the defense in front of Rogers, chased down most opportunities. Early on, the Squaws were making strong, accurate passes to open space, but were getting beat to the ball.
“We were struggling with their back four,” Lee added. Bellmont did, however, take a 2-1 lead 65 seconds into the second half on a scramble play in the box. “Jay County’s back four is very fast. Again, we played some good teams and their two center backs made it difficult on us.”
While the defense was turning away chances, up front the Patriots (6-2) were making opportunities of their own.
Jay County sophomore Kendra Muhlenkamp scored the game’s first goal — her fifth of the season — on an assist from Breea Liette. The junior won a 50/50 ball at midfield and kicked it forward. Muhlenkamp slipped behind defense and beat Bellmont goalkeeper Kirsten Winter.
In the 52nd minute, senior forward Stormi Canterbury stormed up the right side of the field with the ball and sent a right-footed cross pass toward the net. It bounced once past Winter, while Lucy Laux and Liette crashed the net. Standing a mere feet from her teammate, Laux tipped it past Winter into the left side of the net for the equalizer. It was her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
“Stormi has the foot,” Laux said. “Depending on the goalie — and they have a real good goalie — Stormi can probably score a couple more out there. She puts them in there. She can place them.”
