FORT RECOVERY — The Indians entertained the likely favorite to win conference player of the year.
They had a difficult time stopping her.
Fort Recovery High School’s volleyball team lost to the Division IV No. 8 New Bremen Cardinals on Thursday, 25-16, 25-20, 25-13.
Carley Stone had a team-high 18 kills and 15 digs for the Indians (9-2, 2-1 Midwest Athletic Conference), who finished 14th in the most recent Division III poll voting. Devin Post and Kiah Wendel were next with three kills apiece. Brooke Gaerke notched four blocks while Madi Rammel tallied 21 assists and nine digs.
Paige Jones, a junior who committed to the University of Michigan and is on her way to being conference player of the year, had a game-high 22 kills for the Cardinals. 
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team won, 25-21, 25-23.
Hannah Knapke had a team-high six kills, and her 10 kills tied with Brooke Kahlig for the team lead. Rachel Acheson and Faith Kahlig both tallied six assists, and Chloe Showalter totaled 19 service points.

Starfires fall
FORT WAYNE — The South Adams boys soccer team lost for the fourth straight time Thursday, dropping a 4-1 decision to the Wayne Generals.
Wayne scored the first three goals, one of which was in the first half, to take a commanding 3-0 advantage. South Adams (3-6) finally broke through when Brian O’Donnell scored on a penalty kick for his 10th goal of the season.
With four minutes left in the contest, Wayne added to its lead to put the Starfires away.
South Adams goalkeeper Lars In’t Groen had 10 saves.

Spikers win
BERNE — South Adams’ volleyball team remained atop the conference standings, outlasting the Heritage Patriots 25-16, 12-25, 25-17, 21-25, 15-12.
Madi Wurster led South Adams (14-5, 3-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) with 17 kills. She also had eight digs and four blocks. Jade Farlow finished with eight kills, while Caralie Farlow and Morgan Alberson added seven kills each.
Shania Neal had a team-high 21 digs, and Julia Grabau totaled 29 assists. Caralie Farlow also had 15 digs.
The Starfires’ junior varsity team also won, 25-23, 25-21.
Esther Troyer had four kills and Hannah Dull totaled 17 digs. Lydia Loshe recorded a dozen digs, three kills and three assists.

Tigers top tennis
BLUFFTON — The South Adams boys tennis team lost to the Bluffton Tigers on Thursday, 5-0.
David Muselman, the No. 1 singles player for the Starfires, lost to Mitchel Kuhlenbeck 6-3, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, Jamison Kistler fell to Evan Baumgartner 6-4, 6-1, and Jackson Ingle knocked off Zach Teeple at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
South Adams’ No. 1 doubles team of Jack Wallace and Paul Stuckey lost to Karsen Greenway and Gabe Eisenhut 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Wes Stout and Cam Stevens dropped their match to Mason Heller and Spencer Schwartz 6-0, 6-0.

Stars third
BLUFFTON — Playing on its sectional course, the South Adams girls golf team finished third Wednesday in a meet with the host Norwell Knights and the Bishop Luers Knights at Timber Ridge Golf Course.
Host Norwell won with a score of 195, and Bishop Luers was second with 204. South Adams, which won the Allen County Athletic Conference championship Monday with a 198, shot a 213 Wednesday.
Kaiti Gorrell and Selina Jones led the Starfires with matching scores of 51. Gorrell made par on the par-4 second and par-5 seventh holes. Jones shot even on the par-4 fourth.
Becah Schwartz was third on the team with 53, and Allyson Schwartz completed the team score with a 58.
Katie Stiltner also competed and she shot a 67.

SA trumps Heritage
MONROEVILLE — The South Adams middle school football teams defeated the Heritage Patriots on Wednesday by a combined score of 72-0.
The SAMS eighth grade team won 32-0, and the seventh graders picked up a 40-0 victory. 
James Arnold ran for two touchdowns and threw for another in leading the eighth graders. He scored from 4 and 3 yards respectively, then connected with Nick Miller for a 46-yard touchdown. Aaron Timmons, who was 1-for-4 on PAT kicks, also had a 66-yard touchdown run. Alex Gorney added the other score for the Starfires.
Like Arnold, Aidan Wanner scored twice on the ground and once through the air for the seventh grade Starfires. He scored on runs of 67 and 7 yards, and found AJ Dull for a 37-yard TD.
Trey Schoch (10 yards) and Kenneth Richardson (6 yards) also scored rushing touchdowns.
Both teams move to 3-0 (3-0 Allen County Athletic Conference).

Tribe, Cavs split
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery Middle School seventh and eighth grade football teams split with the Coldwater Cavaliers on Thursday.
The eighth graders won, 26-0, and the seventh graders fell 16-8.
Clay Schmitz, Regan Martin and Derek Jutte all scored touchdowns for the FRMS eighth graders. Cobe Wendel ran in a 2-point conversion.
Ryne Post and Schmitz both picked off passes, and Russel Gehle recovered a fumble.
Riley Hiser scored the lone touchdown for the Tribe seventh graders. Logan Homan ran in a 2-point conversion.
