Cavs come back vs. FR
Top-ranked Coldwater scores final 23 points to top Tribe
COLDWATER, Ohio — The Cavaliers had already showed they could overcome an early deficit against a quality team.
They proved the point again Friday against the Indians.
Despite being without its starting quarterback, Fort Recovery High School’s football team nabbed a couple of early leads against Division V No. 1 Coldwater. But the Cavaliers scored the game’s final 23 points to hand the Indians their first defeat, 30-12.
FRHS (3-1, 1-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) held a 12-7 lead for about five and a half minutes after Andrew Stocker caught a 14-yard scoring pass from senior Jason Roessner, who got the start in place of Caleb Martin. The University of Toledo commit missed the game and is expected to be out for one more after undergoing an appendectomy earlier this week.
The Cavaliers (4-0, 2-0 MAC), who rallied from a 14-0 deficit to beat Division VI No. 3 Marion Local last week, pulled ahead for good on a Nate Rindler 74-yard punt return with 4:09 remaining in the second quarter. A Dylan Thobe 5-yard TD three minutes later put the home team up 20-12 at halftime.
Rindler scored again on a 53-yard pass from Thobe on Coldwater’s first drive of the second half, and a Neal Muhlenkamp 22-yard field goal gave the home team its final margin.
Fort Recovery, which scored the game’s first points on a 29-yard TD pass from Payton Jutte to Davis Will, out-gained the Cavaliers 291-247 and had more first downs. But was unable to put any points on the scoreboard in the final 33 minutes of the game, and was hurt by a pair of turnovers.
Roessner carried the Division VII No. 2 Indians in Martin’s absence, completing 10-of-19 passes for 95 yards and running 17 times for 85 yards. Ryan Braun caught seven of his passes for 71 yards, and Will Homan added 66 rushing yards on 11 attempts.
Coldwater was limited on the ground, but Thobe racked up 206 yards on just eight completions to lead the Coldwater offense. He also had an 8-yard TD run in the first quarter.
