Capsule Reports
Two injured
A Portland woman was airlifted to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne on Friday afternoon following a head-on collision in Wayne Township.
A witness told Jay County Sheriff’s Office that Jennifer J. Wendel, 45, 289 S. Indiana 1, was traveling on south on Indiana 67, near county road 125 South, in a 2015 Chevrolet pick up when her vehicle drifted left of the center line. She continued toward an oncoming semi and did not attempt to slow down before the collision, the witness said.
The driver of semi, Samuel G. Curtis, 63, Muncie, said he was traveling north on Indiana 67, near county 125 South and saw Wendel’s vehicle was in his lane and believed it was going to turn east bound. He hit his brakes in an attempt to avoid a collision. Curtis said he did not believe Wendel attempted to stop her vehicle before the crash.
A report from the sheriff’s office says Wendel was trapped in her vehicle following the collision and that she was incapacitated. Curtis suffered cuts and elbow and arm pain as result of the accident.
The responding officer was unable to speak with Wendel because of the severity of her injuries. Lutheran Hospital would not provide information Friday evening on her condition.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene, and damage is estimated to be more than $10,000 in the 4:10 p.m. accident.
Ran off road
A Portland man drove his Kia off the road Thursday evening in Portland after he apparently blacked out.
Ryan R. Mock, 39, 812 W. 7th Street, told Portland police he was driving south on Meridian Street when he blacked out. He said he awoke and his 2009 Kia Optima was off the road, having crashed into a parked 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada at 1512 N. Meridian St. As a result of the collision, the Oldsmobile hit a parked 1998 Chevrolet Astro.
The Oldsmobile is registered to Stacie and Mark Hirschy, 305 S. Main St., Bryant. The Chevrolet is registered to Larry B. Bumbalough Jr., 515 N. Pleasant St., Portland.
Mock complained of pain on his lower arm and wrist but refused treatment.
Damage in the 6:38 p.m. accident is estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
Rear end crash
A Portland man struck the rear of a Dodge truck with his Mitsubishi on Friday morning in Portland.
Daniel R. Cox, 39, 818 W. Race St., told Portland police he was eastbound on Race Street, west of Pleasant Street, when he could not steer his 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse, causing it to hit a 1999 Dodge pick up.
Damage in the 7:46 a.m. accident is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
