East Jay girls cross country wins again

The Chiefs put up another strong performance on Thursday.
It resulted in another victory.
East Jay Middle School’s girls cross country team had four in the top five in leading the squad to a first-place finish in a four-team meet at Hudson Family Park.
The Chiefs totaled 17 points, ahead of second-place Monroe Central. Wes-Del and Union did not qualify for team scores.
East Jay’s boys finished second with 29 points, two behind Monroe Central. Wes-Del was third with 85 and Union fourth with 107.
Mara Bader and Lydia Keihn led the Chiefs with a one-two finish. Bader had a time of 13 minutes, 28 seconds, and Keihn was 16 seconds behind. Miranda Alig (fourth), Lilly Schmit (fifth) and Rachel Heitkamp (eighth) also scored for the girls.
Mitchell Winner finished first in the boys race to give East Jay a sweep. He had a time of 11 minutes, 59 seconds. Xavier Myers ended in fourth, Tyler Manor placed sixth, Flint Schmiesing was seventh and Dustin Harris was 11th.
East Jay also won the boys junior varsity race with a score of 27 points. Nico Minnich led the Chiefs by finishing third. Al Hemmelgarn (fourth), Josh Monroe (fifth), Wyatt Kunkler (seventh) and Grayson Williams (eighth) also scored for East Jay.
Chiefs sweep Indians
East Jay’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams both defeated Union City on Thursday.
The eighth graders won 25-10, 25-20, while the seventh graders earned a 25-22, 25-17 victory.
Natalie Miles led the eighth grade Chiefs (7-5) with eight kills, and Anna Heath was second with six. Kearsten Myers totaled 17 service points, including six aces, and Ashlyn Dow was next with four. Pacie Denney notched seven assists.
Madison Dirksen led the seventh graders with four kills. She also totaled three assists, sharing the team lead with Jayden Claytor and Maddy Wenk. Ralyn Chaffins and Wenk both had three kills, and Chaffins totaled a team-high eight points and five aces.
Tribe spikers roll
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery junior high volleyball teams continue to roll, earning victories over the Marion Local Flyers on Thursday.
The eighth graders swept the Flyers, 25-17, 25-23, and the seventh grade squad picked up a 22-25, 25-18, 25-19 victory.
Hope Wendel led the FRMS eighth graders (11-1, 3-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) with seven kills and eight assist.
Kierra Wendel and Paige Fortkamp both chipped in with six assists. Brenna Homan and Kierra Wendel (10 points) shared the team-high of five aces.
Marissa Gaerke racked up 14 kills, three aces and six points for the seventh grade Indians (11-1, 5-0 MAC). Whitley Rammel followed with five kills, while Aubrey Knapke and Faith Grube both had 10 points apiece. Knapke also led the squad with a dozen assists.
FR beats Minster
MINSTER, Ohio — The Fort Recovery seventh and eighth grade football teams both dismantled Minster on Thursday.
The Tribe seventh graders won 44-12, while the eighth graders picked up a 48-24 victory.
Derek Jutte had four total touchdowns, three on rushing plays and another on a punt return, to lead the FRMS eighth graders. Gavin Thobe returned an interception for a touchdown, and Regan Martin also had a touchdown reception. The Indians move to 5-0 on the year.
Riley Hiser scored three times in leading the seventh grade Indians (3-2). Payton Brunswick added two rushing touchdowns, and the Fort Recovery defense forced two safeties.
