SIDNEY, Ohio — The Indians were off to a hot start.
Things haven’t gone their way in a while.
The Fort Recovery High School volleyball team lost for the fifth time in six matches Monday, falling to the host Lehman Catholic Cavaliers 25-23, 25-23, 25-18.
Carley Stone and Cassy Martin led the offense for the Indians (10-6) with 10 and eight kills respectively. Stone also added 17 digs, and Martin led the squad with four blocks.
Madi Rammel, Devin Post and Paige Jutte each chipped in with three kills, while Rammel tallied three blocks and a team-high 21 assists. Alexis Bubp recorded 21 digs, and Kiah Wendel had 14 digs.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team won 25-13, 25-7.
Hannah Knapke led the Tribe with five kills, while Val Muhlenkamp and Chloe Showalter were second on the team with five kills. Natalie Homan had seven points and once ace, Harlie Dues notched six service points and Rachel Acheson had nine assists.

Stars blanked
BERNE — The South Adams boys tennis team lost a 5-0 match to the Muncie Central Bearcats on Monday.

David Muselman dropped his No. 1 singles match to Muhiga Khamasi 6-0, 6-4, and at No. 2 singles Aidan Bahre lost 6-0, 6-1 to Erich Ong. The Starfires’ No. 3 single player Jack Wallace lost to Nick Schmaltz 6-0, 6-1.
Jamison Kistler and Zach Teeple fell to Brock and Brody McCoy 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Paul Stuckey and Cam Stevens fell at No. 2 doubles to Charlie Hammock and Griffin Hill 6-2, 6-1.
In junior varsity action, Wes Stout dropped both of his matches. He lost to Zach Abrell 6-0, then to Austin South 6-2.

SA, Blackford draw
BERNE — South Adams’ boys soccer team played to a 1-1 draw on Monday with the Blackford Bruins.
The Starfires also defeated the Woodlan Warriors 2-1 on Saturday in Woodburn.
Senior Brian O’Donnell scored the lone goal in the draw with Blackford. It was his 13th goal of the season and it gave the Starfires (4-7-2, 1-2 Allen County Athletic Conference) a 1-0 lead. 
The Bruins later tied the score later in the first half.
O’Donnell also tallied both goals against the Warriors. The senior tied the score 17 minutes into the game, then found the back of the net in the second half to give the Starfires the victory.

Patriot JV loses
WOODBURN — The Jay County junior varsity football team lost to the Woodlan Warriors on Monday, 28-8.
Jay County (3-3) scored its only touchdown in the second quarter, as the Warriors took a 21-8 lead into halftime. Woodlan tacked on another score in the fourth quarter to pad its lead.
Trey Castillo carried the ball 12 times for 148 yards. Gabe Faulkner completed three of his 11 pass attempts, connecting with Caleb Webster twice for 45 yards and a touchdown.
Ben Antrim led the JCHS defense with 6 1/2 tackles. Webster was close behind with six, and Noah Harris added 5 1/2 stops.

Vikings edge Patriots
HUNTINGTON — A fourth-quarter touchdown gave the Huntington North Vikings a 21-14 victory over the Jay County freshman football team on Monday.
The Patriots (0-5) scored in the third quarter and added a two-point conversion to tie the game at 14, but the Vikings broke the tie in the final frame.
Gabe Link had 68 total yards, throwing for 45 and adding 23 on the ground. He completed two of his five pass attempts, one of which went for a touchdown.
Storm McLaughlin had a 37-yard touchdown reception. Cooper Jacks had five tackles.

Fugiett breaks record
DUNKIRK — Two days after setting a course record in Muncie, Sophia Fugiett has two more records to her name.
Fugiett, a West Jay Middle School eighth grader, set a course and school record by finishing first during a four-team meet for the host Eagles.
Hagerstown won with 34 points, ahead of Monroe Central (61) and West Jay (71). Muncie Burris did not qualify for a team score.
In the boys’ race Monroe Central won with a score of 39. Hagerstown finished second with 46 points, Burris was third with 64 and West Jay totaled 81 for fourth.
Fugiett crossed the finish line in 11 minutes, 52 seconds, nearly a minute ahead of the runner-up. Raven Weaver was third for West Jay, Aubri Hatzell finished 13th, Grace Shimp placed 18th and Gabi Bilbrey was 36th.
Aaron Funkhouser was the top WJMS boy, finishing seventh in 11:59. Trenton Alexander was 11th, Gage Baker placed 12th, Kaleb Weaver finished 22nd and Jaiden Fields placed 29th.

Chiefs fall
SELMA — The East Jay sixth grade volleyball teams both lost on the road Monday to the Selma Braves.
The Chief A team lost 25-7, 25-7, and the B squad fell 25-17, 25-15.
Natalie Wehrly led the A team (1-7) with three kills. She also had went 4-for-5 from the service line for three points. Sophia Baughn had two digs, and Laci McGinnis had two points.
Brianna Zorn and Raquel Pineda both had one kill to lead the B squad (1-4). Aryanna Ray was 7-of-8 from the service line in totaling five points. Kelsey Frantz had three points and Patience Hambrock had one point.
