Jay County High School’s boys tennis team had its sectional semifinal against Randolph Southern postponed Wednesday because of thunderstorms.
The tournament will resume at approximately 4 p.m. today. Should weather become an issue again, it will be postponed until Friday at 5 p.m. A last-ditch effort would be to play at 9 a.m. Saturday, both rounds if necessary.
Nearly 24 minutes into the match on Wednesday — defending champion Winchester was squaring off against Union City in the other semifinal — it was delayed because of lightning northwest of JCHS.
Teams were sent back to their respective busses while tournament director and Jay County coach Scott Miller discussed the options. The lightning never let up, and the match was officially postponed at 5:50 p.m.
Jay County was in command of all of its matches. The No. 1 doubles team of Kyler Hudson and Luke Weaver had a comfortable 5-1 lead over Tyler Pegg and Devin Guthrie, but trailed in the seventh game 40-30. At No. 2 singles, Payton Heniser was ahead of Jordan McReynolds 5-0, and led the sixth game 30-15.
At No. 1 singles, Garrett Rodgers held a 3-2 advantage against Kory Slick and was one point away from pushing it to 4-2, and the No. 2 doubles team of Gabe Blankenship and Xavier Ninde also led 3-2, but trailed the game 15-love.
All four matches were in the first set with the Patriots serving.
