A short story by former Portland resident Margaret Ronald has been included in “The Best Science Fiction of the Year, Volume 2,” which was published this week by Night Shade Books of New York. The book was edited by three-time Hugo Award winner Neil Clarke.
Ronald, a graduate of Williams College, is the author of the Hunt series, “Spiral Hunt,” “Wild Hunt,” and “Soul Hunt” published by Harper Collins. Her fantasy and science work has been published in a number of magazines and online publications. Her short fiction has previously been anthologized in “Best Steampunk II,” “Best Steampunk III,” “Superheroes,” and “The Best Horror of the Year.”
The daughter of Jack and Connie Ronald of Portland, she resides in Watertown, Massachusetts, with her husband Josh and her daughter Johanna. She is employed as a senior project manager in the information technology department at Harvard University, where she is pursuing a master’s degree in higher education administration.
Ronald attended Jay Schools through grade 10 and is a graduate of the Indiana Academyfor Science, Mathematics, and the Humanities.
Miss Indiana to visit
Brianna DeCamp, who was chosen as 2016 Miss Indiana and appeared in the Miss America pageant, will promote a “packing event” on behalf of KISA Outreach, an organization that helps children in Uganda.
The event will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur.
Art contest entries
Congressman Jim Banks will be accepting artwork entries from high school students at his Fort Wayne office for the 2017 Congressional Art Competition.
“The Congressional Art Competition is a great opportunity for high school students to showcase their work to the hundreds of thousands of people who visit the U.S. Capitol building each year,” said Banks.
Entries must arrive at the office at 1300 S. Harrison St., Room 3105, by 5 p.m. on April 28. A showcase to exhibit the submissions will be held the first week of May.

The Art Competition committeeinclude Brian Williamson of Portland.
The winning artist will receive a round trip flight to Washington D.C. to see their artwork displayed in the United States Capitol.

A DVD series on Winston Churchill will begin Tuesday at John Jay Center for Learning.
The six-week series will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and will be facilitated by Richard Kennison, Lt. Col., Retired, USAF.
