GAS CITY — The Patriots rallied to score the game-tying run in the top of the seventh inning.
The Indians won on a walk off in extras.
Jay County High School’s baseball team dropped its season opener 7-6 in eight innings on Saturday to the host Mississinewa Indians.
Jay County (0-1) fell behind 6-4 after Ole Miss notched five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Patriots rallied to score one run in each of the next two frames, but the Indians scored the game-winning run on a groundout in the bottom of the eighth.
Cole Stigleman had a triple and two singles, one RBI and a walk to lead Jay County, which also got three singles and an RBI from Ethan Myers as well as a double and a single from Max Moser.
Ryan Schlechty collected two singles, an RBI and a walk, while Jacob Geesaman and Mitchel Frasher each had one single as the Patriots out-hit the Indians 12-7.
Gaven Hare shouldered the loss in relief, giving up three runs — two earned — while allowing four hits and seven walks with two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.
Jake Myers started, giving up four earned runs and three hits. He walked seven and struck out four in four innings.
FR sweeps Cougars
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s softball team picked up its first two wins of the season Saturday, sweeping the Van Wert Cougars in a doubleheader.
After allowing 10 runs through the first two innings of game one, Fort Recovery (2-5) answered with four runs in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth to trail 10-9.
Van Wert notched one run in the fifth before the Indians tacked on three more in the home half of the frame, and held the Cougars off the scoreboard for a 12-11 win to snap a five-game losing streak to start the season.
Fort Recovery kept the momentum going in the second game, jumping out to a 5-4 lead after the first inning.
The Indians scored twice in the fourth for a 7-4 lead, and hung on as the Cougars cut the deficit to the eventual 7-5 final score.
Emily Hart and Hannah Knapke finished with four hits and three RBIs for the day. Hart hit a triple in the first game.
Olivia Homan notched her first career win in game one, while Post got the victory in the second game.
Stars split
MONROE — The South Adams baseball team split a pair of contests Saturday in the Adams County Cancer Classic at Adams Central.
The Starfires (1-2) surrendered five runs in the fifth inning of a loss to the host Jets in game one, then rebounded to beat Bellmont 8-5 in the second game.
South Adams nabbed an 8-7 lead in the top of the fifth inning against Adams Central, but the Jets struck for five runs in the home half of the frame before adding one more in the sixth for the win.
Against Bellmont, the Braves tallied four runs in the fifth inning to make it 4-4 before the Starfires took the lead for good with three runs in the home half of the frame. South Adams tacked on an insurance run in the sixth before Bellmont got one back in the seventh.
Marcus Teeter led the Starfires with three hits on the day, while Jayden Dull, Corbin Blomeke and Braxton Haight each had two hits. Joe Stuber and Dull both smacked doubles, and Grant Besser had a team-high four RBIs.
Besser got the win pitching, scattering three hits over five innings while allowing four unearned runs and five walks. He struck out eight.
Golfers sixth
YORKTOWN — The Jay County boys golf team placed sixth in the Yorktown Invitational at The Players Club at Woodland Trails.
It was the best the JCHS boys have ever finished in the tournament.
Mount Vernon won the 13-team invitational with a score of 316. Delta was second with 332, and Richmond placed third with 340.
Jay County totaled 358, beating seventh-place Hagerstown by two strokes.
Junior Collin Haines paced the Patriots, earning an 88. Seniors Jay Houck and Nick Hayden followed with matching scores of 89, and Kyler Hudson shot a 92 to complete Jay County’s team score.
Sophomore Matthew Franks shot a 107 in his varsity debut.
