After having a pair of matches canceled because of inclement weather, the Patriots finally got to hit the court.
Jay County High School’s girls tennis team opened its season Saturday with a pair of losses as it hosted a double-dual with the Richmond Red Devils and the Hagerstown Tigers.
The Patriots (0-2) dropped a 5-0 match to Richmond in the morning, and nearly bounced back to beat the Tigers but fell 3-2 in the afternoon.
Against the Tigers, senior Katy Hamilton (1-0) won her varsity debut at No. 3 singles. Hamilton was in control of the entire match, defeating Maggie Moore 6-1, 6-2.
The Patriots’ other victory came from the No. 2 doubles team of Betsy Muhlenkamp and Emily Reier. The juniors dropped the first set 6-4, but rebounded to defeat Lillie Neal and Brittany Walther 6-0, 6-1 in the final two sets to get their first career victory.
At No. 2 singles, senior Megan Johnson lost in the opening set to Abby Shepherd 6-1, but evened the match with a 6-2 win in the second. Shepherd then outlasted Johnson to win a 9-7 tiebreaker and take the decisive set 7-6.
No. 1 singles player Shelby McClain fell behind in the first set 5-1 against Jacqueline Habzansky before rallying off four consecutive games to knot the score at five games apiece. Habzansky notched the final two games to win 7-5, and held off McClain in the second set for a 7-6 (11-9) victory.
Jay County’s No. 1 doubles team of cousins Audrey and Kayla Dirksen lost to Mekayla Todd and Kayla Vinson 6-3, 7-5.
In the match against Richmond, McClain (0-2) lost to Anna Creech 6-2, 6-2. Katie Becker defeated Johnson (0-2) at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2, and JCHS senior Francine Muhlenkamp (0-1) dropped her varsity debut at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-0, to Mackenzie Cook.
The Dirksens (0-2) weren’t able to win a game in their 6-0, 6-0 loss to Jessica Crane and Marissa Wiggington, while Muhlenkamp and Reier (1-1) fell to Krissa Owens and Abby Mayer 6-0, 6-3.
The Patriots return to action Thursday on the road as they open Allen County Athletic Conference play at Bluffton. Action starts at 5 p.m.
