HOUSTON, Ohio — Nick Thwaits faced one over the minimum 16 batters.

He struck out all but four of them.

Thwaits fanned 12 batters while Cade Wendel and Cashaus Metzger each drove in three runs Friday as the Fort Recovery High School baseball team defeated the Houston Wildcats on Friday, 11-1 in five innings.

Fort Recovery (5-1) notched two runs in the first inning before adding one more in each of the second and third frames. The Tribe broke the game open with six runs in the top of the fourth inning before the Wildcats finally pushed across a run in the bottom of the frame. The Indians tallied one more in the fifth to complete the run-rule victory.

Wendel smacked two singles, walked once and had three RBIs. Thwaits helped himself out at the dish with two hits and one RBI, while Reese Rogers also drove in a pair of runs. Metzger, who walked three times, had a career-high three RBIs. Fort Recovery benefitted from four Houston errors.

Thwaits retired the first nine batters he faced before surrendering Houston’s only hit in the fourth inning. He allowed one unearned run without issuing a walk in five innings of work to notch his first victory of the season.

BERNE — The South Adams softball team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 5-3 victory over the Carroll Chargers on Friday.

After failing to score through the first two innings, South Adams, which finished 16th in the most recent Class 2A poll voting, notched a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings to lead 4-1. Carroll trimmed the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the sixth, but the Starfires added an insurance run in the home half of the frame.

Katelin Augsburger tallied the win despite surrendering 10 hits. She allowed three earned runs, struck out a dozen and walked five in the complete-game effort.

Megyn Pfeiffer had two solo home runs to lead the Chargers, who committed five errors.
