BERNE — It took a few innings for the Starfires to get their bats going.

But once they did, the Bruins had a tough time limiting the damage.

The South Adams softball team scored five runs in the third inning and rolled to a 7-0 victory Tuesday over the Blackford Bruins.

South Adams (3-0), which is ranked 10th in Class 2A, broke the game open in the third inning when Lexi Delinger scored before Isabella Ramirez hit a two-run double to left. Morgan Alberson followed with an RBI triple, and three batters later Taylor Augsburger hit a two-run double. 

Katelin Augsburger and Alberson both had RBIs in the sixth inning to push the advantage to the eventual final score.

Kayla LeFever, Keira Pinnock and Jenna Meyers also had hits in the game.

Katelin Augsburger notched the win. She tossed six innings, scattered two hits, struck out 13 and walked one.



SA sweeps Northfield

BERNE — South Adams’ girls tennis team moved to 2-0 on the year as it swept visiting Northfield on Tuesday, 5-0.

Julia Grabau and Virginia Lagos needed two sets to win their respective matches. At No. 2 singles, Grabau defeated Sydney Prater 6-1, 6-0, and Lagos knocked off Kandra Stout 6-0, 6-4, at No. 3 singles.

Haley Gerber, the SAHS No. 1 singles player, dropped the first set to Jordan Bratch 6-4, but rebounded for a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Caralie Farlow and Breanna Potts won their No. 1 doubles match against Audrie Randal and Maddie Garrett, 6-0, 6-1. 

At No. 2 doubles, Sydney Pierce and Katrina Fosnaugh beat Macy Sears and Erin Whetstone 6-2, 6-1.

The SAHS junior varsity team also won, 5-1. Hannah Dull, Cassie Yoder and Jade Farlow won their singles matches. Sarah Kloepper and Fatima Sandoval teamed for a doubles victory, as did Michelle Donis and Katie Hale. 



Strong third lifts SA

FORT WAYNE — The South Adams baseball team scored seven runs in the third inning Tuesday on its way to a 13-7 victory over the host Canterbury Cavaliers.

The Starfires (2-2) jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning before breaking the game open with a seven-run third. After the fourth frame the Starfires led 10-3, and tacked on three more in the top of the fifth to go ahead 13-3. The Cavaliers responded with four in the home half of the frame but couldn’t make up the deficit.

Jayden Dull was a home run shy of the cycle, tallying a triple, a double and a single while driving in five runs. 

Nic Stuber was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and Terry Dawn also notched three hits. Gilbert Lynch and Dawn both had doubles.

Dull notched his first win of the season on the mound. He pitched four innings, allowed three earned runs on four hits, struck out four and walked six.
