The Patriots threw two no-hitters last season.

They’re halfway there just two games into 2017.

Ryan Schlechty, a Jay County High School sophomore, didn’t allow a hit and helped himself at the plate as the Patriot baseball team beat the Eastbrook Panthers on Tuesday, 5-0.

Schlechty, who threw 13 pitches before Monday’s game against Coldwater was rained out, got the nod against the Panthers. He lost his bid for a perfect game on an error in the second inning, and issued a walk in each of the third and fifth frames. His only other blemishes were a pair of hit by pitches.

The sophomore went the distance, striking out eight in 97 pitches.

Jay County (1-1) scored a run in each of the first three innings before tacking on two more insurance runs in the sixth.

At the dish, Schlechty had a single and an RBI. Jacob Geesaman had a double and a single, and drove in a run while Max Moser also had two hits and scored twice. Ethan Myers, Wyatt Geesaman, Michael Schlechty, Peyton Heniser and Mitchel Frasher all had singles.

Jay drops opener

The Jay County boys golf team dropped its season opener Tuesday, 151-166, to the Richmond Red Devils at Portland Golf Club.

Junior Collin Haines shot a 39 to lead the Patriots (0-1). Jay Houck was one shot behind, with Kyler Hudson posting the No. 3 team score with a 43. Nick Hayden rounded out the team total with 44.

Ian James and Matthew Franks also competed, and they turned in scores of 49 and 53 respectively.

The Patriots travel to Hickory Hills to take on Wapahani on Thursday.

Jays walk off

DELPHOS, Ohio — The Indians and Blue Jays didn’t register a hit in 10 innings.

A defensive mishap in the bottom of the 10th inning led to the only run as the Fort Recovery baseball team lost to Delphos St. John’s on Tuesday, 1-0.

Fort Recovery (5-2, 0-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) had the chance to score in extra innings, as the Indians got a runner in scoring position in each of the eighth and 10th frames. But the Tribe, which beat St. John’s 11-6 in a non-conference tilt March 25, wasn’t able to get ahead on the scoreboard.

In the bottom of the 10th, a hit by pitch and a sacrifice bunt gave the Blue Jays a runner at second with two outs. A wild throw on the next play allowed the winning run to score.

Tribe tops Jays

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery junior varsity baseball team defeated the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays on Tuesday, 7-2.

The Indians (2-1) scored a run in the first inning before jumping out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. The Blue Jays cut the deficit in half with two runs in the fifth inning, but Fort Recovery tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Ian Homan had two doubles, a single and drove in a pair of runs. Preston Hoying had two hits and two runs, and Joe Homan notched three singles. Riley Dilworth and Cole Grisez also had a pair of hits.

Joe Homan got the win on the mound, allowing two unearned runs on one hit while striking out two and issuing one walk in seven innings.
