James Landers

March 5, 1927-April 13, 2017

James Robert Landers, 90, Bryant, died Thursday at Persimmon Ridge Healthcare in Portland.

Born in Randolph County to Clarence and Anna (Simmons) Landers, he attended Jefferson High School in Randolph County.

He married Martha Spillman on June 24, 1951, and she survives.

A veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II in the China Burma India Campaign, he retired from Teledyne Portland Forge after 42 years as a machinist and foreman.

He attended Westchester United Methodist Church and was a member of American Legion Post No. 211 in Portland where he served in the Honor Guard, Jay County Historical Society, Jayland Antique Car Club, Dunkirk Elks Lodge, Bryant Senior Citizens and Local No. 1595 Machinist Union.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Michael Landers (wife: Rebecca), and Robert Landers (companion: Elaine McCaffery), both of Portland; a daughter, Connie Kenyon (husband: Dan), Avon; two brothers, Jon Landers (wife: Lola), Indianapolis, and Harold Landers (wife: Norma), Marion; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Baird-Freeman Funeral Home in Portland with Pastor Darrell Borders officiating. Burial will be in Gravel Hill Cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 211.

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday and prior to services on Tuesday at the funeral home.
