OSSIAN — The Starfires’ hot start continues.

South Adams High School’s softball team earned two more wins Saturday, sweeping the host Norwell Knights in a doubleheader.

The Starfires (7-0), who are ranked 10th in Class 2A, won the first game 3-1, and pounced on the Knights early for a 4-2 victory in game two.

South Adams scored one run in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings in game one. Norwell notched its only run in the bottom of the fourth.

In the second game, South Adams scored three runs in the first inning as Katelin Augsburger hit a two-run double, and she was knocked in on a double from Taylor Augsburger. Norwell cut the deficit to 3-2 with a run in the second and third innings, before the Starfires doubled the lead to 4-2 in the sixth.

Katelin Augsburger struck out 15 on her way to the victory in the first game. She allowed two hits and one unearned run.

Anna Nussbaum pitched SAHS to the victory in game two. She scattered five hits over five innings, allowing two unearned runs and one walk.

Morgan Alberson, Katelin Augsburger, Tori Raugh and Kayla LeFever had two hits each on the day.



Jay golfers third

FARMLAND — Jay County’s boys golf team finished in third place Saturday at the Monroe Central Invitational at Hickory Hills Golf Club, the Patriots’ sectional course.

Marion finished first in the 12-team tournament, scoring 322 points. Delta, a JCHS sectional opponent, was second with 329. The Patriots totaled 360, ahead of Pendleton Heights (372).

Junior Collin Haines shot an 86 to lead the Patriots. Jay Houck was second on the team with 88, and Kyler Hudson was one stroke behind with 89. Nick Hayden shot 97 to complete the Patriots’ team score.

Matthew Franks also competed, and he finished with 104.



Patriots, ’Dogs split

CENTERVILLE — Jay County’s baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday with the Centerville Bulldogs.

The Patriots (3-2) won the first game 9-4, but dropped the second in a high scoring affair, 19-13.

Jay County scored two runs in the first inning of game one, and pushed the lead to 3-1 after the fourth inning. The Patriots tacked on three runs in each of the next two innings, while Centerville scored a run in the final four frames but couldn’t cut into the deficit any further.

In game two, Centerville jumped on Jay County to the tune of five runs in the first inning before adding three more in each of the next two frames. The Patriots tallied six runs in the fifth to trail 11-10, but the Bulldogs pulled away with eight runs in the home half of the inning.

Ryan Schlechty led the Patriots with five hits on the day, including a double and a triple, while driving in six runs. Cole Stigleman, Ethan Myers and Michael Schlechty each contributed four hits.

Gaven Hare got the win in game one, scattering six hits over six innings, allowing three runs — two earned — while striking out eight.



JC softball third

RICHMOND — The Jay County softball team rebounded from a loss to place third at the Richmond Invitational on Saturday.

Jay County (2-2) lost the opening game to the Centerville Bulldogs, 11-10, and bounced back with a 5-4 victory over the Hagerstown Tigers.

The Patriots led the Bulldogs 6-5 after four innings, and led 9-5 heading to the bottom of the sixth. But Centerville rallied to take a 10-9 lead after six innings, and scored a run in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off win.

Against Hagerstown, Jay County trailed 4-3 after the fifth inning before it scored two runs in the sixth and held on for the victory.

Catera Gierhart led the Patriots with four hits on the day. Kaylee Inman and Kensey Litton had two hits each, with Chloe Trissel, Katie Carpenter, Emily Corn, Gwen Butcher and Kady Finnerty adding two hits apiece.



FR drops two

CELINA, Ohio — A pair of big innings led to two losses for the Fort Recovery softball team in the Celina Invitational on Saturday.

The Indians allowed 16 runs in the fourth inning of a 24-2 loss to the Lincolnview Lancers and then surrendered 10 runs in the third inning of a 16-4 loss to the Crestview Knights. Both games lasted only five innings.

Against Lincolnview, the Indians led 1-0 after the second inning before giving up 24 straight runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

The Indians (3-8) were behind 1-0 to Crestview heading to the bottom of the third inning before the Knights put up a double-digit run total to break the game open.

Emily Hart had five singles with one RBI to lead the Indians offensively. Hannah Knapke had a double, two singles and two RBIs. Rachel Thien also hit a double, as Taylor Thien and Aleigha Jenkins had one hit each.



Two score for JC

FORT WAYNE — One individual and a relay scored for the Jay County boys track team in the North Side Relays on Saturday.

Jay County scored five points to finish last in the 15-team event. North Central won the team title with 166 points, edging Carroll by four points. Northrop was third with 108 points.

Gavin Randall finished fourth in high jump, clearing 5 feet, 8 inches. He then joined Tyler Leonhard, Logan Duran and Matthew Paquette to place sixth in the 4x400-meter relay.



Eagles win

HARTFORD CITY — West Jay Middle School’s boys and girls track teams both finished first Thursday in a four-team meet at Blackford.

The WJMS girls scored 96 points, ahead of Wes-Del (49), Monroe Central (36) and Blackford (14). The Eagles boys scored 64.5 points to win. Monroe Central (50) was second, Blackford (47) was third and Wes-Del (32.5) was fourth.

Sophia Fugiett and Kinsey Shannon won two events each. Fugiett won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs, while Shannon won the 100 and 200 dash events.

Abby Benter won 100 hurdles, Kaylee Pennington was first in discus and Raven Weaver earned a victory in the 2,400 run.

Kenzie Ring, Demi Grove, Benter and Shannon combined to win the 4x100 relay.

For the WJMS boys, Drew Powers won the 100 dash and long jump, and Luke Haggard won the 200 dash.

Lane Chapman, Quinn Faulkner, Haggard and Powers teamed for a win in the 4x100 relay, with Logan Brown, Aaron Funkhouser, Dallas Workman and Chapman joining to win the
