FORT RECOVERY — The Indians were three outs away from their first doubleheader sweep of the season.
Instead, the Raiders rallied to split the twin bill.
The Fort Recovery High School baseball team allowed eight runs in the top of the seventh inning of game two as it split a doubleheader with the Russia Raiders on Saturday.
The Division IV No. 5 Indians (10-5) won the first game 13-8, and were leading 11-5 heading to the seventh inning. Fort Recovery walked five batters, committed two errors, hit a batter with a pitch and gave up one hit as the Raiders scored eight runs in the top of the inning before holding the Tribe scoreless to get the unlikely win and the doubleheader split.
Cade Wendel and Will Homan each finished the day with four hits, while Wendel led the team with four RBIs. Homan drove in two runs. Kody Shinaberry tallied three hits and two RBIs, as Nick Thwaits and Evan Post both knocked in three runs on two hits.
Post notched the win in the first game, and Micaiah Cox set a school record with this fourth save of the season.
Cox suffered the loss in the second game.
Tribe drops two
SPENCERVILLE, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s softball team was at the wrong end of two lopsided scores on Saturday at the hands of the Spencerville Bearcats.
The Indians (3-13) were ahead 7-5 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning of game one, but the Bearcats scored 12 runs in the home half of the frame to get a 17-7 run rule victory.
Spencerville scored six runs in the third inning and seven in the fifth on its way to an 18-8 victory in six innings in game two.
Emily Hart, Lydia Wenning and Bailee Tebbe had three hits apiece on the day. Hart had a double and two singles, while Wenning and Tebbe both had RBIs. Rachel Thien had a single and a double, and Devin Post hit a double and drove in a pair of runs.
Olivia Homan took the loss in both games.
Stars take two
FORT WAYNE — The South Adams girls tennis team improved to 6-1 on the season Saturday as it won two matches at the South Side Invitational.
The Starfires knocked off the North Side Legends 5-0, before a 4-1 victory over the host South Side Archers.
Haley Gerber, Julia Grabau and Katrina Fosnaugh each got easy singles victories against the Legends. Gerber defeated Grace Henschen at No. 1 singles, 6-1, and Fosnaugh beat Tiana Brown at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0. Grabau won at No. 2 singles by forfeit.
The Starfires’ No. 1 doubles team of Caralie Farlow and Breanna Potts beat Paw Say Luve 6-0, 6-0, while Sydney Pierce and Hannah Dull beat Pway Hoo and Ciny Kim by the same score.
Against South Side, Gerber earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Angela Mamani, and Grabau got a 6-0, 6-0 win over Marisabel Sanchez.
Caralie Farlow and Potts picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dolores Juarez and Shamari Jackson, as Pierce and Dull beat Katie Hart and Salma Perez 6-0, 6-0.
Jade Farlow dropped her No. 3 singles match to Leila Bojcic, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3).
SA sweeps
BERNE — South Adams’ softball team remained undefeated on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of the Lakewood Park Panthers.
The Class 2A No. 9 Starfires won the first game 6-0, then did all their damage in the first inning of game two en route to a 10-0 victory in five innings.
Katelin Augsburger matched her career high with 18 strikeouts in game one. She allowed one hit and issued two walks in seven innings of work. Isabella Ramirez and Lexi Dellinger both had two hits, with Taylor Augsburger and Katelin Augsburger adding one hit apiece.
Katelin Augsburger improved to 9-0 on the season. She has registered 134 strikeouts, including 35 in her last two starts, and has an ERA of 0.50.
Morgan Alberson had a triple and drove in three runs during game two, as Shania Neal, Casi Evans, Kayla LeFever and Taylor Augsburger each added hits.
Anna Nussbaum got the win, scattering five hits and striking out five in 4 2/3 innings.
Girls win
ANSONIA, Ohio — The South Adams girls track team finished first in the Ansonia Tiger Relays on Friday.
The Starfires, the only Indiana team, scored 92 points to win the 10-team meet. Covington was second with 84 points and Franklin-Monroe tallied 70 for third.
South Adams’ boys scored 79 points to finish second out of 11 squads. Houston won with 83, and Covington was third with 74 points.
Addie Wanner had two individual victories in the long jump and high jump. She had a distance of 15 feet, 4.75 inches, in the former, and won the latter with a height of 5 feet, 4 inches.
The 4x800-meter relay of Kallee Patch, Isabel Von Gunten, Eliza Harruff and Olivia Von Gunten won in 10 minutes, 24.56 seconds. Caroline Kloepper, Olivia Von Gunten, Harruff and Patch combined to win the distance medley relay in 13:38.31. The 4x100 relay team of Emma Rosswurm, Acacia Anderson, Wanner and Kloepper got a victory in 53.3 seconds, as Hadi Hawbaker, Ashley LeFever, Isabel Von Gunten and Harruff won the middle distance medley realy in 7:43.9.
Kloepper, Patch and the Von Gunten sisters teamed to win the 4x400 relay in 4 minutes. 21.83 seconds.
For the SAHS boys, Lars In’t Groen and Paul Neuenschwander were second in the discus and long jump respectively.
