The Patriots’ bats warmed up just as the weather did.

Jay County High School’s baseball team smacked a season-high 15 hits Monday in a 13-3 victory over the Wayne Generals in six innings.

The Patriots (5-3) jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning, and scored once in the third and three times in the fourth for a 7-1 advantage. Wayne cut into the deficit with a pair in the top of the fifth, but the Patriots responded with a five-run effort in the home half of the inning thanks to a two-run home run from Michael Schlechty.

Jay County tacked on one more in the bottom of the sixth to get the run-rule victory.

Cole Stigleman led the Patriots with three hits, including a double and two singles. Peyton Heniser and Ethan Myers both had a double and a single, while Heniser drove in two runs and Myers tallied four RBIs. Jacob Geesaman, Max Moser, Ryan Schlechty and Michael Schlechty had two hits each. Geesaman had three RBIs, including the eventual game-winner.

Ryan Schlechty got the win on the mound, allowing one unearned run on two hits. He struck out six and walked one in four innings.

Patriots win two

Jay County’s boys golf team finished first in a three-team match Monday at Portland Golf Club.

The Patriots (4-2) matched their season low, shooting a 166, Monroe Central was second with 192, and Winchester was one stroke behind.

Collin Haines, a junior, earned match medalist honors with a 39. He made par on six straight holes while finishing with a pair of bogeys and one double bogey.

Senior Jay Houck matched Haines with six pars, but he was one stroke behind the junior with 40. Nick Hayden, also a senior, made birdie on the par-5 14th hole and had par twice on his way to a 42.

Kyler Hudson had three pars and finished with 45 to complete the Patriots’ team score.

Matt Franks also competed for Jay County, and he shot 53.

Stars beat Cavs

BERNE — South Adams scored four runs in two separate innings on Monday in a 10-3 victory over the Coldwater Cavaliers.

The Starfires (13-0), who moved up one spot to No. 9 in Class 2A, led 3-0 after the third inning before breaking the game open with four runs in the fourth. After Coldwater got a run back in the top of the fifth, the Stars answered with four more runs.

The Cavs scored one run in each of the final two innings, and South Adams completed its scoring with a run in the home half of the sixth.

Morgan Alberson and Tori Raugh each had doubles to lead South Adams. Isabella Ramirez had two singles and drove in three runs. Taylor Augsburger, Katelin Augsburger, Jenna Myers and Lexi Dellinger each had two hits.

SA stumbles

FORT WAYNE — South Adams committed a few too many errors on Monday in a 7-4 loss to the New Haven Bulldogs at Parkview Field.

The Starfires (7-5), who were the designated home team, were ahead 3-2 after the third inning. The Bulldogs scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning and added one more on a fielder’s choice to take a 5-3 advantage.

Both teams scored a run in the sixth inning, and New Haven added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Joe Stuber led South Adams with a pair of singles, while Collin Shaffer drove in a pair of runs. Grant Besser hit a double as the only extra-base for SAHS, which got singles from Marcus Teeter, Nic Stuber, Gilbert Lynch and Shaffer.

Jayden Dull suffered the loss. He gave out two hits, allowed five runs — four earned — while walking four and striking out two in 3 2/3 innings.
