GENEVA — Collin Haines didn’t start the year as the Patriots’ No. 1 golfer.

He’s played his way into that spot, and Tuesday he kept his hold on the position.

Haines shot a 3-over-par 39, earning match medalist honors in leading the Jay County High School boys golf team to beat host South Adams and Adams Central at Golf Club of the Limberlost.

Jay County shot 184, ahead of South Adams (188) and Adams Central (193)

Haines, a junior, had a double bogey on the par-4 first hole, then rattled off five consecutive pars. He bogeyed the par-4 seventh hole before closing his round with back-to-back pars.

Jay Houck made par twice on his way to a 46. Kyler Hudson was three strokes behind, and Nick Hayden shot 50 to complete the Patriots’ team score.

Ian James made the only birdie for Jay County on the par-5 second hole on his way to a 52.

David Muselman and Jake Rife led South Adams with matching scores of 41. J.D. Groh shot 52 and Nick Wurster followed with 54. Eli Hamrick also played and he shot 59.

Jay County’s junior varsity team defeated South Adams, 223-260. Matt Franks led the Patriots with 52 while Conner Benter and Elijah Corwin were each two strokes behind. Joey Hall completed the Patriots’ team score with 65. Devin Harris (66) and Tait Longsworth (70) also competed.



JC tops Indians

Jay County’s girls tennis team picked up its first sweep of the year on Tuesday, defeating the Union City Indians, 5-0.

Shelby McClain and Klarisa Hemmelgarn each won their singles matches by 6-1, 6-0 scores. McClain defeated Katie Rismiller at No. 1 singles, and Hemmelgarn earned a victory over Emalee Bocanegra at No. 3 singles.

At No. 2 singles, Megan Johnson defeated Breann Ward, 6-3, 6-3.

Jay County’s No. 1 doubles team of Emily Reier and Kayla Dirksen won the first set against Emily Cline and Allie Conklin 6-3, but dropped the second 7-6. The Patriot duo won the tiebreaker 15-13 instead of playing a third set.

At No. 2 doubles, Audrey Dirksen and Katy Hamilton beat Audrey Sullenbarger and Sydney Ralston 6-0, 6-2.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also won, 5-0. Francine Muhlenkamp, Dawn Minnick and Sydney Baughman each won their singles matches. Betsy Muhlenkamp and Elyse Bost teamed for a doubles victory, and Janae Kirby joined Katilyn Ruiz for a doubles win as well.



Wendel shines

MARIA STEIN, Ohio — Cade Wendel tossed a gem and helped himself out at the plate Tuesday as the Fort Recovery baseball team beat the Marion Local Flyers, 6-0.

Wendel tossed a complete game, scattering two hits, allowing three walks and striking out 10. At the dish, he had a triple and walked twice while scoring three runs.

Division IV No. 5 Fort Recovery (11-5, 4-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) scored one run in each of the first three innings, before pushing across two during the fifth. The Indians added an insurance run in the sixth inning all while keeping the Flyers off the scoreboard.

Nick Thwaits had a double and a single while driving in two runs.

Evan Post and Kody Shinaberry each had doubles, with Davis Will adding a single.

Ben Homan, Will Homan, Reese Rogers, Mason Will and Post each drew walks, while Thwaits and Wendel both stole one base.



Flyers beat Tribe

FORT RECOVERY — Eight errors and a nine-run sixth inning gave the Marion Local Flyers softball team a 14-3 win in six innings over Fort Recovery on Tuesday.

Fort Recovery (3-14, 1-3 Midwest Athletic Conference) scored twice in the bottom of the second inning for a 2-1 advantage, but fell behind 3-2 after the third. Marion had a 5-3 lead after the fifth before breaking the game open with nine runs in the sixth inning.

Lydia Wenning had a double and a single while driving in a run for the Indians. Rachel Thien also hit a double and had an RBI. Emily Hart, Hannah Knapke, Bailee Tebbe and Taylor Grisez each had singles.

Olivia Homan suffered the loss, allowing 14 runs — only one earned — on 11 hits with six walks in six innings.

Fort falls

FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s junior varsity baseball team lost to the Marion Local Flyers on Tuesday, 10-2.

The Flyers scored twice in the third inning before adding five runs in the fourth. The Flyers put up two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth before the Indians (2-6) scored twice in the home half of the frame.

Josh Muhlenkamp, Riley Dilworth, Preston Hoying and Cole Grisez each had hits for the Indians, with Dilworth and Hoying smacking doubles.

Garrett Faller took the loss. He gave up seven runs — two earned — on six hits. He struck out four and walked three in 3 1/3 innings.
