MONROEVILLE — When the Starfires have taken to the diamond this season, two things are almost certain.

Katelin Augsburger pitches a gem, and they win.

Both happened Tuesday.

Augsburger tallied a dozen strikeouts and Jenna Myers doubled in the only run of the game as the South Adams High School softball team eked by the host Heritage Patriots, 1-0.

The Starfires (14-0, 2-0 Allen County Athletic Conference), who are ranked eighth in Class 2A, had chances to score in the second and fourth innings but wasn’t able to push across any runs.

Then in the top of the fifth inning, Kayla LeFever led off with a single and Myers hit a double to left field to score LeFever.

Morgan Alberson and Katelin Augsburger each had singles.

Augsburger allowed just one hit and four walks while striking out 12 Patriot batters in the win.



Wanner sets record

PONETO — Addie Wanner broke her own school record Tuesday, helping the South Adams girls track team beat Southern Wells, 101-22.

The Starfire boys also won, 71-52.

Wanner cleared a height of 5 feet, 5.5 inches, in high jump to break her own school record. She also added wins in the 100-meter hurdles (15.8 seconds), 300 hurdles (50.3 seconds) and long jump (15 feet, 6 inches).

Caroline Kloepper picked up three individual wins, finishing first in the 100 dash (13.2 seconds), 400 dash (1 minute, 1.1 second) and 200 dash (28.2 seconds).

Kallee Patch (1,600 run – 5:46, 3,200 run – 12:38) and Calyssa Lehman (discus – 93 feet, 4 inches, shot put – 31 feet, 3.5 inches) also won a pair of events.

Olivia Von Gunten finished first in the 800 in 2:43, as the Starfires also won all three relays.

For the SAHS boys, Lars In’t Groen and Bailey McIntire each earned three victories. In’t Groen won high jump (5 feet, 10 inches), discus (132 feet, 9 inches) and shot put (45 feet, 3.5 inches), while McIntire was first in the 1,600 run (5:00), 800 run (2:18) and 3,200 run (10:02).

Andres Martinez also picked up a win in the 400 dash in 55.2 seconds.



Stars top Tigers

BERNE — The South Adams girls tennis team defeated the Bluffton Tigers on Monday, 4-1.

Haley Gerber and Hannah Dull both won their singles matches. Gerber defeated Hannah Gerber at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-4, and at No. 2 singles Dull knocked off Ava Ringer 6-3, 6-0.

At No. 1 doubles, Caralie Farlow and Julia Grabau teamed to beat Claudia Williams and Lexi Ramseyer 6-2, 6-1, and Sydney Pierce joined Breanna Potts to defeat Maranda Craighead and Kristen Bennett 6-2, 6-0.

The only loss for SAHS came at No. 2 doubles, as Virginia Lagos fell to Madison Heller 6-3, 6-2.

South Adams’ junior varsity team won 6-2. Katrina Fosnaugh, Jade Farlow and Cassie Yoder each won their respective singles matches. Sarah Kloepper and Fatima Sandoval won their doubles match. Kate Buckingham joined Shayla Welch for a doubles win, then partnered up with Kirstien Herman for a victory.



SA falls to Heritage

MONROEVILLE — The South Adams baseball team gave up two big innings in a 13-3, six-inning loss to the host Heritage Patriots on Tuesday.

South Adams (7-6, 1-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) fell behind 1-0 after the first inning before allowing five runs in the third inning. The Starfires cut into the deficit with three runs in the top of the fourth. Heritage responded with a run in the home half of the inning, before adding two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth for the lopsided victory.

Braxton Haight hit a double for the Starfires’ only extra base hit. He also had two RBIs. Grant Besser, Corbin Blomeke, Nic Stuber and Joe Stuber each had singles in the loss.

Besser suffered the loss. He gave up nine runs — three earned — on nine hits. He struck out seven and walked two in 4 2/3 innings.
