Jay winery is offering Tipsy trivia
What syrup is made from pomegranate juice?
How long does it take the average human to fall asleep?
What country would you reach first if you headed due east from New York?
Think you know the answers?
The Tipsy Glass is offering the chance to prove it.
The young winery at Bearcreek Farms in northeastern Jay County hosted its second trivia night Thursday, inviting patrons to bring their teams and compete in a 2.5-hour-long contest for prizes.
Tipsy Glass owner Audrey Muhlenkamp scheduled the event in conjunction with having the winery open as part of Jay County Chamber of Commerce’s “First Thursday” promotion, in which local businesses stay open until at least 7 p.m. The idea came from a customer.
“I had done trivia when I was at Purdue in college,” said Muhlenkamp, who opened the facility at Bearcreek Farms early this year. “I’d go out with friends and we’d participate in these things at Buffalo Wild Wings and I had fun, so I thought, ‘Yeah.’”
The format, with the duo of Mel Garza and Mike Vanderhorst — J Bob’s Beats — leading the game, is fairly straightforward. Teams of typically five or six, with clever names like “The Sassy Sippers” and “The Corkscrews,” compete in a series of six rounds with 10 questions each (and sometimes a bonus question). Clues are available, but teams can also block those clues if they’re sure they have the right answer.
There’s a break between each round to allow Garza and Vanderhorst to tally scores, and then they provide the answers and the results. Some rounds involve small prizes for the highest-scoring team, and the overall winners at the end of the night get gift certificates to the winery.
Thursday’s crowd ballooned from the first run on July 6 to a group of more than 50, with 12 teams competing. Amanda Ehrhart and her teammates on “Who Brought the Baby?” — they did, by the way — were back for their second round of trivia after winning the inaugural competition.
“It’s really a lot of fun,” she said. “It’s something that we always thought would be fun to do, and we wanted to try out the winery. …
“It’s just a nice get together.”
Garza and Vanderhorst, who are based in St. Marys, Ohio, lead trivia nights regularly, mostly at VFW and American Legion halls in Auglaize and Mercer counties. They get their questions from a variety of books and internet sources.
The former does the asking while the latter checks answers if a team attempts to block a clue and tallies up the scores.
“This is great,” said Garza. “She had three times more people than she had last month. And if she wants to add an extra Thursday, we’d be happy to come over here.”
That’s something Muhlenkamp, who said she would typically get about a dozen visitors on a “First Thursday” prior to having trivia involved, is considering.
“We talked about it a little bit,” she said. “I think we’ll stick with the first Thursday of the month for September. As long as attendance doesn’t fall off a cliff, then I think we’ll add.”
Oh, and the answers to those questions — grenadine, seven minutes and Portugal.
