MusicWorks is now taking registrations
Taking Note
Arts Place is accepting registrations for music lessons through its Music Works program.
Lessons will take place at the Portland Center at 131 E. Walnut St. and Blackford County Arts Center at 107 W. Washinton St. in Hartford City.
Lessons will be available in baritone, cello, clarinet, electric guitar, flute, French horn, guitar, harp, mandolin, organ, percussion, piano, recorder, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, tuba, ukulele, viola, violin and voice.
Lessons will begin the week of Aug. 28 and continue through May of 2018.
Registration forms and brochures are available at both centers, by calling at (866) 539-9911, or online at artsland.org.
Library programs
A program on postal history will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Jay County Public Library.
Jeff Crown will talk about Jay County postal history and showcase his collection of Portland stamps and letters.
He will also discuss share how to begin stamp collecting.
Clubs meeting in August will include Hook & Needles Club from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 22 and Writers Guild at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 28.
The JayCPL Book Club will discuss “Readers of the Broken Wheel Recommend” by Katarina Bivald on Aug. 21.
Friends of the Library will have its annual used book sale from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. Aug. 24 and 25, and from 8 a.m. until noon Aug. 26 in the Community Room at the library.
Donations may be brought to the Community Room on Aug. 21 and 22. Gently used books, movies, music, games and puzzles will be accepted.
The library is located at 315 N. Ship St. in Portland. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, call (260) 726-7890 or visit www.jaycpl.lif.in.us.

Winners of the art show were Lynette Waters-Whitesell — first place ($400) for “Barnacles Built for Two.”
Scott Anderson — second place ($300) for “IdeologyMachine.”
Teddy Lepley — third place ($200) for “Bird Lover.”
Jenny Moore Smith — fourth place ($100) for “Slot Canyon.”
Earning honorable mentions were Tom Brown — “Curly Circles;” Stephanie McDairmant — “Delicate Journey;” Mary Ellen Bertram — “Angel;”Anne Maddox — “Where the Hell Did She Come From?;” Beverly Mills — “Julio’s Gift;” Charles Knox — “Extinction Series: Layson Millerbird;” Jeff Brackett — “Power Lines;” Ann Johnson — “Matthew 10:36;” Patrick Kluesner — “Still-Life Sublime;” and Juli Thorson — “Fractured Self.”
